Anteaters toy with UCSD in nonconference contest

UC Irvine’s sixth-ranked Anteaters jumped to a 7-2 halftime lead

and were never threatened en route to a 12-7 nonconference men’s

water polo game at UC San Diego Saturday.

Dreason Barry led the way with six goals and Jeff Powers added

thre more. Ben Carlson, Rick Merlo and Cameron Bassett each scored

once for the Anteaters, who improved to 14-7. The tenth-ranked

Tritons fell to 16-11.

SOCCER: UCI falls, 5-3

The UC Irvine Anteaters lost to the Cal State Northridge Matadors

5-3 at a very wet Anteater Stadium Saturday night.

David Emane ( scored his second goal of the season for UCI to tie

the game at 1-1 at the 25:21 mark.

Agustin Neuspillar scored his first goal as an Anteater at the

60:33 mark to tie the match 2-2. Sean Iliff earned an assist.

Lerato Simelane his team leading seventh goal of the season at the

74:28 mark to tie it at 3-3.

The Anteaters fall to 7-7-3, 2-3-2 in the Big West. Cal State

Northridge improves to 12-4-2, 5-2-1.

HOOPS: Lions fall

Vanguard University’s women’s basketball team was a 69-58 loser to

Kentucky-based Pikeville College (4-0) Saturday in the championship

game of the 2002 Mr. Gatti’s Invitational.

The Lions (1-1) went 4-for-16 from three-point range and were 18

of 44 from the field (41%).
