Fashion Island gets a Design Within Reach

Design Within Reach is opening at Fashion Island’s Atrium Court

today, and will celebrate its grand opening with a reception on

Wednesday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The store sells hard-to-find

international designer furniture, lighting and home accessories.

Classic designs available are by Ray and Charles Eames, Mies van

der Rohe, Alvar Aalto, George Nelson, Marcel Breuer and many others.

Also featured are young designers including Phillipe Starck, Ron

Arad, Jorge Pensi, Enrico Franzolini, Rodolfo Dordoni and new

designers such as West Coast-based Michael Goldin.

Design Within Reach also offers expert interior design planning

and decorating, and will host lectures by designers as well as

BE AMUSED

Also opening today at Fashion Island is Modern Amusement. The

traditional and modern sportswear company has a loyal following in

Southern California. Modern Amusement provides comfort, quality, fine

fabrications and innovative details in its designs. The fall line for

men and women includes woven and knit tops, bottoms, outerwear and

sweaters, as well as accessories and handbags.

Modern Amusement’s logo of a black crow is based upon the company

founder’s nickname given as a child growing up in Glendale. Based in

Costa Mesa, it has additional stores in Costa Mesa, Los Angeles,

COMFORT SHOES

Mephisto Newport Beach carries the largest selection of Mephisto

shoes in California. The French company is known as a premier maker

of comfort shoes. All shoes are hand-crafted, made with top-grain

leather and lined with calfskin so shoes breath more efficiently.

Owner Michael Lamoria says Mephisto shoes are a great investment.

The life of a shoe can be extended with its re-crafting service, in

which shoes go through 40 different steps until they’re in perfect

condition. Re-crafting is $85 for shoes and boots, and $65 for

sandals.

Some people wear the shoes for more than 12 years. Women’s sandals

start at $95, mid-range shoes are $200 and boots are about $300.

Men’s sandals start at $135 and shoes are $250 to $350. Bring in any

at Neiman Marcus at Fashion Island. Comolli’s pieces are inspired by

the rain forest. Her 18-karat gold works of art glimmer with garnet,

peridot, tourmaline and citrine.

Also at Neiman Marcus on Tuesday, cosmetic experts are hosting a

lunch at 12 p.m. in the Zodiac to talk about their newest and most

innovative skincare products. The team of specialists from Guerlain

Beaute will be discussing the leading edge technology in the fight

against wrinkles. Cost is $25 per person. Seating is limited. The

cost includes lunch and a complimentary gift.
