Anteaters, UC Riverside play to scoreless draw

The UC Irvine Anteaters (8-7-4, 3-3-3) and the UC Riverside

Highlanders (3-12-4, 1-7-1) finished in a scoreless draw at Anteater

Stadium Wednesday night. Freshman goalkeeper Ryan Mathy earned his

second shutout of his career finishing with eight saves on the night.

The Anteaters played with 10 players for the final 22 minutes of

regulation as well as the two overtime periods.

Goalkeeper Josh Alexander earned a shutout as well with 10 saves

on the night for UCR. Senior Scott Bowman playing in his final game

at Anteater Stadium led both teams with six shots on the night.

UC Irvine will travel to Santa Barbara on Saturday to take on the

UC Santa Barbara Gauchos at 7 p.m.

HOOPS: Pirates lose, 71-50

The Orange Coast College men’s basketball team scored only 15

points in the second half and lost its second game of the season, a

71-50 nonconference setback to host Imperial Valley Wednesday.

OCC Coach Steve Spencer said the Pirates (0-2) could not contend

with the Arabs’ inside game and Coast missed too many shots in the

second half. OCC sophomore Lanier Brown led the Pirates with 12

points, while freshman Jason Garey added 11 points.

“We need to get tougher as a team,” said Spencer, who also

mentioned sophomore guard Stephon Seales, a returning starter, has

been out with an ankle injury. Seales might be ready to play

Saturday, when the Pirates host Mira Costa at 3 p.m.
