Ice Breakers down Patriots

Taking the concept of teamwork to heart last Saturday, the Ice

Breakers opened up the 2002 AYSO Region 117 fall playoffs with a 3-1

victory over the Patriots at a rain-soaked Wardlow Field in

Huntington Beach.

Matthew Bordas set the pace for the Ice Breakers early when he

drove the field before delivering a sharp pass to Matthew Steinhaus,

who drilled the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Defender Nick Frens and center halfback Gavin Perdomo each had key

takeaways, and Trevor Verone made a terrific mid-air grab and save in

goal during the first period to key the Ice Breakers defensively.

Mitchell Phillipy, Michael Rowe and Garrett Hickman also played

strong games at midfield and on defense.

Kane Ordonez, Cole Souza and Tommy Vollum each contributed to the

victory.

The scoring of Steinhaus clinched the win for the Ice Breakers.

In girls’ playoff action:

Region 117 Under-12 Division

Lightning Bolts 7, The Freedom Fighters 2

Erika Longoria scored three first-half goals and added one more

after intermission to lead the Lightning Bolts.

Stephanie Schroeder opened the scoring for the Lightning Bolts

with a first-period goal and later scored in the fourth quarter, and

Camille Canales scored one goal.

Wendy Edman, Kayci Rezac, Jessica Ross and Francine Sandoval keyed

the midfield, and Ashley Ashurst, Stephanie Brown, Mahrria Rivera,

Melody Sainz and Miranda Sosa applied defensive pressure for the

Lightning Bolts.

Under-12 Division

Quick Chicks 6, Stars & Stripes 0

Water puddles and rain slicks couldn’t slow the Quick Chicks in

this rainy playoff opener.

The strong defensive play of Karlee Hodgman, Kimberly Kurdziel,

Braelyn Snook, Kailey Ivers and Niki Cannon gave the Quick Chicks the

shutout.

Hayley Townsend netted three third-period goals, and Alison

Hensley, Kristy Verone and Pouneh Radparvar each scored once on an

offense that included solid support from Alex Long, Jessica Parker

and Alexandra Lawrence.

Under-10 Division

Purple Piranhas 5, HB Slimers 2

Emily Bush, Jessica Erickson and Delaney Glasgow all scored in

overtime to lift the Purple Piranhas at Gisler School in Fountain

Valley.

The Slimers had taken an early lead, but goals by Glasgow and

Allison Gillespie brought the Purple Piranhas into a 2-2 tie.

Jillian Torrance, Katie Philipson and Aurora Hess got the Purple

Piranhas’ passing game in gear with strong play at midfield.

Bombers 2, Blue Steel 0

Emily Walling and Kim Choto scored goals, and Keili Elliott got

the shutout to lead the Bombers at Gisler School.
