Great election and nature coverage

Congratulations and thank you for your excellent and expansive

coverage of our local election. We citizens really appreciate the

information and education you provide. It certainly helps our

grass-roots democracy work.

The results were pretty much summed up in the great lead photo on

your front page. Those are the smiles of people who have enjoyed the

exercise of their democratic freedoms.

Also, the Natural Perspectives column in the Independent today was

terrific. With the impending water shortage problems, people will

have to get wise to the fact that native plant gardens are the way to

go. They will save water, money, as well as support the native

wildlife. Thanks for the notice about the Shipley plant sale.

I enjoy reading the column and have learned much from it. Thanks

for educating the reading public.

City should repeal the banner law

Our City Council should absolutely concede and repeal this

ridiculous law. It is difficult to understand how our council could

waste their time on this fundamentally stupid and useless law.

I can only surmise that the council has nothing to do when it

meets. It will also be very interesting to see, if the council

members do not repeal this, just how angry the taxpayers become when

we have to pay for the lawsuit to uphold this law, which they, all by

themselves and without input from the voters, enacted.

I am in support of the aerial advertising. I do not think the city

should pursue a fight. I live in southeast Huntington Beach and do

not have a problem with the noise at all. I think the planes are a

symbol of summer and contribute to the festive beach atmosphere.

City should fight to keep banner law

In reference to banner-towing airplanes, I am of the opinion that

the city must fight on, as this is a noise problem and does not have

anything to do with the 1st Amendment.

McGrath sending kids wrong message

I have many complaints with the city attorney’s race.

In our local high schools, the government teachers are teaching

our soon-to-be young voters how the process works. As a graduate from

Marina High School, class of 2001, my daughter voted for the first

time this year. Courtney walked into the polling place and was

smiling from ear to ear. The polling people had never experienced

anyone so excited to vote. She was still beaming when she walked out.

My daughter was proud to exercise her right to vote.

She researched the propositions, bonds and measures. Courtney

attended a candidate night for a local school board to hear what

issues they stand for and what is important to them for our children.

All this “proactiveness” came from what she was taught by her

government teacher, Mr. Carpenter, at Marina High School. In our

house, we have him to thank. He did his job right.

Our high school government teachers are teaching the kids ethics,

morals in a campaign, standing on the issues that you are concerned

about, etc. There is nothing in the curriculum about how to trash a

candidate.

The City Council race was run above board. The city attorney’s

race was not. So thanks to the new city attorney, Jennifer McGrath.

Thank you. You taught our young voters how to win by smearing the

opponent. Shame on you!
