It’s a clean sweep in the first round

The first round of CIF Playoffs competition for local high school

girls is in the books, and all four, Corona del Mar, Newport Harbor,

Costa Mesa and Sage Hill high schools will be back in action on

Saturday.

Corona del Mar (16-3) was an easy winner over Notre Dame of

Sherman Oaks, 16-2, and Newport Harbor (12-7) was an 84-82 winner on

games to snap a 9-9 tie with Santa Margarita in Division I play.

In Division V circles, Costa Mesa (13-5) eliminated Covina, 10-8,

and Sage Hill (14-3) defeated Estancia, 14-4.

The two nail-biters had heroes galore, right down to Newport

Harbor’s No. 3 doubles team (freshman Megan McKay and senior Danielle

Haxby), which lost in the day’s final match, but the two points

picked up in a 6-2 defeat proved to be the difference in the

tie-breaker.

Each and every victory for Newport was paramount, but the sweep of

Diana Khoury and A.J. Olson in doubles put the Sailors in contention.

Freshman Brittany Sturgess pulled out a 7-5 victory in singles, which

was crucial.

Costa Mesa’s 10-8 win was led by the sweep in singles by Golden

West League champion Hilary Havens (41-2) and doubles by league

champs Chi Doan and Minh-Thy Pham, but a doubles win by Thao Vu and

Valerie Gomez, as well as Brenda Tran and Laura Fais, and Ashley

Hamilton, subbing for Fais, were critical.

Sage Hill had no problem with Estancia behind the 1-2 freshman

singles punch of Kellie Ammerman and Katie McKitterick, and Jessica

Tsoong and Stephanie Chen were sweep winners in doubles, as well.

Corona del Mar’s singles outscored Notre Dame, 54-3.
