One qualifier alive in main draw
Rajeev Ram of the United States, the only qualifier still alive,
rallied to knock off Nenad Toroman of South Africa in a wild
second-round match Thursday, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6), and advance to the
quarterfinals of the second annual Costa Mesa Pro Classic at Costa
Mesa Tennis Center.
Of the eight singles players remaining in the main draw, only Ram
and Croatia’s Sasa Tuksar are unseeded. The event is part of the
men’s USTA Futures circuit.
Top-seeded Yeu-Tzuoo Wang, third-seeded Doug Bohaboy,
fourth-seeded Jose De Armas, fifth-seeded Mike Scheidweiler,
sixth-seeded Raven Klassen and seventh-seeded Mark Hilton have also
advanced to today’s quarterfinals.
Ram defeated second-seeded Christopher Kas of Germany in the first
round, 6-4, 0-6, 6-3, for the tournament’s biggest upset. The finals
are Sunday at noon.
