Anteaters absorb 11-7 loss

Andrew Stoddard’s three goals led No. 2 California past

sixth-ranked UC Irvine, 11-7, in the final Mountain Pacific Sports

Federation men’s water polo contest of the season for both teams at

Spieker Aquatics Complex Saturday.

The Golden Bears (16-5, 5-3) jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one quarter and led 7-3 at halftime. Attila Banhidy, Will Quist and Todd

Hylton (Costa Mesa High) added two goals each for Cal.

Russell Bernstein had eight saves in goal for the Bears.

Senior Jeff Powers led UC Irvine (14-8, 4-4) with three goals and

sophomore Dreason Barry added two for the Anteaters, who held Cal

scoreless in the fourth period. Senior goalie Doug Finfrock recorded

four of his eight saves in the last quarter.

UCI is No. 1 Stanford today at noon. The Anteaters close out their

regular season at UC Santa Barbara Nov. 23. The MPSF Tournament is

Nov. 29-Dec.1 at the Los Alamitos Joint Force Training Base.
