Anteaters short, 73-67

Strakonice from the Czech Republic defeated the UC Irvine women’s

basketball team 73-67 in overtime in an exhibition game Sunday.

UC Irvine missed four consecutive free throws in the last 29

seconds which could have sealed the victory before Jana Kleckova hit

a three-pointer with five seconds remaining to send the game into

overtime (63-63).

Strakonice had two layups and hit six of seven free throws in the

extra period, while UCI missed another four free throws and managed

just four points in the overtime session.

Strakonice was led by Jitka Musilova with 27 points and Kleckova

with 25 points. Each pulled-down a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Anteaters were led by freshman Kristin Thawley with 16 points,

including 8-8 from the charity stripe. Christina Callaway recorded a

double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Courtney Ferguson and

Kristen Green each pitched in 10 points, while Wendy Gabbe came off

the bench to add nine points. Green also dished 10 assists.

UC Irvine will begin the regular season, entertaining Centenary

Monday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Bren Events Center.
