Looking back, 5 years ago this week:

The Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team beats La Habra,

15-7, 15-1, 15-17, 11-15, 15-7, to claim the CIF Division III-AA

championship, winning its fourth section title. The Sea Kings (13-7)

get kills from Jordana Havriluk (25), Sarah Petry (15) and Brooke

Reese (10, five coming in the fifth set) and setter Corre Myer nets

45 assists. Audrey Anhood serves 11 straight points to give the Sea

Kings a 13-4 lead in Game 1 and also contributes six digs.

Newport Harbor High’s girls volleyball team defeats top-seeded

Mira Costa in four games to claim No. 1 status in CIF Southern

Section Division I-AA. The Tars win, 15-5, 15-12, 11-15, 15-7, behind 18 kills from April Ross and 16 kills from Kathy Lavold. The Tars

(20-2) and Sea View League champs, jump to a 12-1 lead in the first

set and a 13-4 lead in the second set before Mira Costa comes

somewhat alive with Ashley Bowles knocking balls toward Newport’s

Krista Dill and Stephanie Taylor stringing three service aces to lead

the Mustangs (19-3) to a 10-3 run in Game 3. But the Sailors hold off

the Mustangs’ charge with Marissa Cothran and Brenda Waterman both

scoring well.

Estancia High’s boys cross country team lands one of four

state-qualifying berths in Fresno with a second-place finish at the

CIF Southern Section Division IV Finals. Junior Alberto Munoz

(Pacific Coast League individual champion) leads the Eagle boys with

a 16:12 (8th overall) behind individual state-meet qualifier Bruce

Hancock of Costa Mesa (7th, 16:10). Tony Magana (16:45), Manuel

Orozco (16:49), Juan Sanchez (16:57) and Javier Labastida score for

Estancia. Newport Harbor finishes second behind Rosemead in the

Division III final and qualifies for the state meet on the running of

Ryan Jensen, Curt Herbert, Steve Jensen, Matt McKinlay and Claudio

Cortes. Three Newport-Mesa girls’ teams (Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa

and Newport Harbor) advance to the state meet. Sophomores Jill Quye

and Liz Morse lead the Sea Kings along with Lindsey Yourman, Jaycee

Mahler and Jenny Cummins. Mesa finishes third in Division IV behind

the running of Jamie DeNoewer, Zoila Gomez, Gegi Van De Walker, Sarah

Cotton and sophomore Jackie Nguyen. Newport Harbor is aided by Lynn

Rinek, Alicia McFall, Amber Steen, Carrie Foss and Jamie Swarberg.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week:

The Corona del Mar girls cross country and Newport Harbor High’s

boys cross country teams win their respective CIF Southern Section

Division III titles at the CIF Finals at Mt. San Antonio College to

qualify for the CIF State Division III Finals at Woodward Park in

Fresno. The Sea Kings win their first CIF championship in girls cross

country, and the first CIF championship for the school since the

girls volleyball team won a title in 1990, on the speed of Tracy

Clark, Dresden Howell, Heather Bray, Brooke Meek, Heather Taketa and

Mollie Flint. CdM enters the state meet seeded No. 1 and is ranked

No. 11 in the nation. Newport (the defending state Division III

champions) also qualify for the state meet on the legs of Gwen Twist,

Kyndra Smith and Heather Davidson. Harbor edges San Marino, 39-45,

for first place to advance to the state finals for the first time

since 1987. Coach Bim Barry’s Sailors are led by Jared Overton, Sky

Peterka, Trent Bryson, Dylan Guggenmos, Shahram Dezahd, Ryan Adams

and Matt Eimers.

Corona del Mar High’s girls volleyball team sweeps Laguna Beach,

15-1, 15-13, 15-12, for the CIF Division I championship and improve

to 29-0, rated No. 1 in the nation according to USA Today. The Sea

Kings finish out their semifinal match with a 15-0 string in the

fourth game and yield only five sideouts in the final 13 points.

Jennifer Stroffe sets the tone for Corona with four first-game kills

en route to leading the Sea Kings with 17 kills, topping Laguna’s

Rachel Wacholder’s 16. CdM’s Lori Newcomer blasts 11 kills and two ace serves and Allison Englebrecht adds five kills, five blocks and

one ace while Caitlin Pickart tallies six kills with Kim Coleman

(five blocks, five kills) and Kim Campbell (two kills, two aces)

triggering Sea King attacks against Laguna Beach. Coleman and

Englebrecht constantly block Wacholder (PCL MVP) at the net.
