CdM rolls, Sage Hill bows

Corona del Mar High’s girls tennis team was an 11-7 winner over

visiting Peninsula in CIF Division I quarterfinals play Tuesday,

while Sage Hill’s Lightning ran into a strong Santa Maria team and

dropped a 10-8 decision in the Division V quarterfinals.

Corona del Mar’s Brittany Holland and Taylynn Snyder both swept in

singles, and Anne and Rachel Yelsey did the same in doubles to give

CdM nine of its 11 points.

Corona del Mar meets Calabasas on Thursday at a site to be

determined by a coin flip today. Calabasas advanced with a 10-8

victory over Woodbridge.

Sage Hill, meanwhile, with seven freshmen in the starting

rotation, gave Santa Maria all it could handle at Park Newport.

Kelllie Ammerman and Katie McKitterick held their own, as usual,

with sweeps to improve to 53-4 and 53-2.

And the doubles team of Jessica Tsoong and Stephanie Chen won two

of three, but Santa Maria, with 10 seniors, six in the rotation on

Tuesday, had a little more depth and improved to 16-7. Paige Fullmer

managed one victory in singles.

The Lightning lost two matches at 6-4 and another at 7-6, and A.G.

Longoria, the Lightning’s third-year coach, said a lot of it was

attributed to Santa Maria’s senior-laden lineup.

“We’ve got our whole future ahead of us and we have some

outstanding incoming freshman next year,” said Longoria of his 15-4

team, which returns to the entire lineup.
