Eddie Johnson, a former Newport Harbor High and Orange Coast

College standout, broke an NCAA Division I-AA record by averaging

61.5 yards per punt to help Idaho State record a 24-14 victory over

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Saturday.

Johnson averaged 61.5 yards per kick on punts of 80, 51, 49, 52,

67, and 70 yards (6 for 369) and broke the record for punting average

in a game formerly shared by Harold Alexander of Appalachian St.

(1992) and Jody Farmer of Montana (1988) who had 55.7 yards per punt.

Johnson holds a school single-season record at Idaho State with a

46.3 punting average, which he set last year. He also led the nation

with a 46.3 yard average, as well as his six games with over a

48-yard average on his way to earning All-American honors last year.
