Newport edges San Clemente

Two goals from Jonathan Figueroa with assists from Spencer Rautus

and Dillan Freiberg keyed Newport Beach in a 3-2 win over eighth-seed

San Clemente in Boys under-11 Plus Team play in AYSO Region 97

soccer.

Rautus scored in the last half with an assist from Blake Davey.

Offensive captain Jake Manning led the charge and was rounded out

by Brian Baca and Whitney Regan.

Captain Davey led the defense in goal and was helped in the net

for one quarter by Figueroa.

Jesse Hickey defended the goal in the first half and he led a

Newport Beach defense that also featured Shawn Shahidi, Malcolm

Faigen and Spencer Martinez.

In Boys under-14 action:

* Slammin’ Smurfs 6, The Who 2

The Slammin’ Smurfs won their first playoff game, led by two goals

from Will Reichenstein, who also notched an assist.

Kyle Caldwell also picked up a goal and an assist for the Smurfs

and Rex Nelson, Andrew Kaban and David Garrett each scored one goal

each.

Goalkeeper Tommy Olson and defenders Sean Marshall, Branden

Rowley, Edgar Torres and Phil Garrett held off most of The Who’s

offensive charges.

Ben Swift, Robert DiFrancesco, Kyle Fults, Chris Gutierrez and

Jordan Hovis moved the ball upfield.

* Slammin’ Smurfs 5, Honey Nut Cheerios 0

Kaban, Caldwell, Nelson, Reichenstein and Garrett each scored

goals for the Smurfs, who passed effectively and demonstrated strong

teamwork.

* Beach Bums 1, The Who 1

Steady play from goalkeeper Eric Dobson and defensive play from

Jeremy Lewis kept The Who to one goal.

Justin Whistler and Robert Norton played tenaciously with help

from forwards Sergio Rodriguez, who scored the only Beach Bum goal,

and Dillon Giedt.

The Beach Bums and The Who played to a tie in an earlier meeting

this season.

In Boys under-12 play:

* Patriots 1, Rebels 0 (Black)

The Patriots bested the Rebels in black uniforms in the first

round of playoffs.

Jackson Carmack scored for the Patriots and strong offense was

provided by Christopher Cowie, Chris O’Campo, Jay Ordaz and Joshua

Bowman.

Midfielders Peter Nguyen, Spencer Baratto, Preston Wheeler and Jay

Wilson added their performances to the Patriot defense along with Wil

Curiel, Daron Arnold, Irving Torres and Randall Hause.

Wheeler and Hause shared goalkeeper duties.

* Rebels (Red) 3, Patriots 0

The Rebels came out firing against the Patriots, with Eric Holland

opening the game with a goal fed by Alex Allione and Corey

Bell-Wheelans, who later scored a goal of his own.

Halfback Levi Rowe added another goal off a corner kick begun from

sweeper Will Munoz and Cort Adler.

The Patriots’ second-half charge was repelled by the play of

fullbacks Nathan Dickey and Evan Call while goalkeeper Tim Barela

thwarted any remaining Patriot scoring chances.

The Rebel midfield of Cameron Conway, Joshua Duerhing, Nick

Vlahakis and John Ryder played steady.

Skillful passing by the Patriots’ Carmack, Ordaz, O’Campo and

Cowie added to an exciting game and midfield support was provided by

Freeman, Jay Wilson, Nguyen, Arnold and Baratto.

Torres, Curiel and Bowman added to the Patriot defense and keepers

Hause and Wheeler kept the Rebels at bay.

* Rebels (Red) 1, Hurricanes 0

Sweeper Conway connected for a goal following a free kick to put

get the Rebels a win.

The Rebels had numerous shots throughout the game from Holland,

Bell-Wheelans, Barela and Jeff Fichter.

Duerhing, Allione, Adler and Vlahakis keyed the midfield as

fullbacks Munoz, Rowe, Dickey and Call minimized shots on Rebel

goalkeepers Ryder and Barela.

* Rebels (black) 1, Rebels (Red) 1

The Red Rebels finished the playoff pool in first place after a

tie against the Black Rebels.

The Red Rebels were constantly turned away by the Black Rebels’

sweeper and goalkeeper, despite the play of Holland, Adler and

Bell-Wheelans.

Additional offensive support camefrom Conway, Duerhing and

Allione.

A see-saw battle broke open by the Black Rebels, who scored on a

shot that deflected off the crossbar and into the goal.

But the Red Rebels quickly answered with a goal from Munoz, who

got help on the shot from Rowe and Vlahakis.

Fichter, Call and Nathan Dickey covered the backfield and Ryder

and Barela shared goaltending duties for the Red Rebels.

* Hurricanes 0, Black Rebels 0

The Hurricanes dueled the second-place Black Rebels to a tie.

Simon Hedrick, Robbie Hampton and Easton Giedt made contributions

as forwards and goaltenders and Grady Kough, Derek Boler and Jordan

McLaren played strong at midfield.

Christian Scott and Morgan Lintz swarmed to the ball as sweepers

and the Hurricanes’ defense received strong play from J.P. Muller,

Justin McLaren, Harrison Faigen and Mick Sheehan.

In Boys under-10 play:

* Newcastle 1, Fighting Ninjas 0

The Fighting Ninjas held Newcastle to their lowest scoring game of

the season and had several scoring attacks, but couldn’t put the ball

in the net.

The Ninjas’ Grant Frazier made several saves in goal aided by

strong defense of Dustin Ayres, Zach Buie and Ryan Ridley.

Taylor Wildman provided speed in the midfield for attackers

Matthew Buchanan and Jake Turner and Spencer Lindsay assisted in the

strategic defense.

Stevie Michaelson, Cody Caldwell and James Jarvis provided a

barrier at midfield.

* Blue Blasters 5, Killer Bees 1

Two goals each from Misha Pakvasa and Craig McKennon in the first

half keyed the Blasters’ win.

Trey Franklin assisted on offense and midfield duties were handled

by Caleb Candelaria and Cory Fults.

Brecht Van’t Hof, C.J. Tona and Ryan Shannon played strong defense

and goalkeeper Jake Likich made some key saves.

Paul Tadross also contributed offensively and Paul Weisinger

helped lead the defense at fullback.

Shannon also played goalkeeper where he made several saves.

Fults moved to forward in the second half and scored a goal in the

fourth quarter.

The Blasters led, 5-0, with just under two minutes remaining

before the Bees scored a goal to avoid a shutout.

* Blue Blasters 4, Stars and Stripes 0

Tona and Likich both scored their first goals of the season in the

second half of the Blasters’ shutout.

McKennon scored two goals to put the Blasters up, 2-0, in the

first quarter.

Van’t Hof, Candelaria and Fults along with midfielder Franklin and

fullbacks Tona and Shannon held the Stars scoreless.

Likich kept the ball out of the net in goal in the first half and

Shannon and Blasters’ goalkeeper Van’t Hof stymied Stars’ attacks in

the second half.

* Killer Bees 4, Volcanoes 1

Neither team scored until late in the game, but the Bees had more

of the scoring touch, getting two goals each from Timmy Root and

Jordan Desguin and Austin Knott assisted on one of the goals.

A strong defense was led by Griff Amies and Tyler Luna and

Maxamilian Catlin and Stefano Nark played solid.

Chris Whitelegge, Vince Aquevequa, Robbie Rettig and Jack Ahearn

all played in goal for the Bees.

In Boys under-8 play:

* Panthers vs. Speedy Hurricane

Goalie Riley Peterson stopped a last-second, point-blank shot on a

breakaway to preserve a tie in the final regular season game.

Kyle Benter and Clay Smythe made several saves earlier in the game

and R.J. Roberts had a shot hit the post.

Michael Reo, Scott Schwartz, Tyler Farrell and Braden Delannoy

kept the offensive pressure and Tyler Schwartz and Carter Yonkers

controlled the defensive end.

Gordon Lewis (injured) cheered his teammates from the sideline.

* Spitfires vs. Hornets

Landon Gyulay and Nick Vieira had one goal apiece and Theo Boistel

and James Newman displayed offensive footwork with Parker Martinez

and Eric Mejia keying the defense.

Both Spitfire goalkeepers, Ishmael Alkayali and Kurt Walde

returned shots back into the field and Ellery Sever added an airborne

goal attempt. Kevin Rakestraw returned a ball with a header.

* The Golden Snitches received a solid effort from the entire

team Saturday.

The defense shined with Pierce Ward and Nicholas Justice each made

saves in goal with Justice displaying sound passing.

Izaak Lofgren made some key saves on defense and also played

forward and Nick Shahidi showed skillful passing at midfield. Stephen

Keenan executed powerful goal kicks and also controlled the midfield.

Craig Borth was relentless on defense and sweeper Kyle Flagg

blasted a corner kick alongside Chase Kapana, who led the attack on

goal.

In Boys under-7 play:

* Shooters vs. Bull Dogs

Wills Johnson, Thomas Quinn and Michael Ischinger played

tenaciously.

Ryan Braun dribbled the ball several times to key Shooters’ goals.

* Laser Dragons vs. Blue Fireballs

The Laser Dragons attacking offense was led by Garrett Byers, J.J.

Von Ahlefeld, Shaun Vetrovec and Peter Kwock.

Solid defense was provided by Ian MacInnis, Brandon Beck and Cole

Chapin along with stellar goaltending from Jack Williamson, Grant

Moore, Rian Atherton and Joey Gregory.

* Fireballs vs. Tiger Sharks

Marc Gehlke and Daniel O’Toole played strong in the attack

positions, helping Mario Nark score a sidekick goal.

They got support from midfielders Nick Huntley, Mitch Mendoza and

Kody Wensley.

Brooks O’Hea and Marcell DeBarros played solid defense while

Brandt Bucher keyed play in goal.

* Blue Dragons vs. Blue Blasters

The Blue Dragons received a strong team effort and Christian

Sandoval scored a goal against the Blasters.

Zachary Buggelin, Samuel Jones and Bryan Shollin made some solid

kicks and Timothy Rojas and Marco Bruscia each passed well.

Ivan Dhuy, Jacob Farwell, Jackson Sanders and Derek Sweet also

contributed to the victory.

In Boys under-6 action:

* Gators vs. Thunderbolts

Both teams battled to the end with the Gators getting two goals

from Kai Sorensen and one goal from Nicolas Houser.

David Schaefer displayed sound ball skills and Zachary Sorensen

and Alex Kerr showed speed on breakaways for the Gators.

The Thunderbolts’ Charlie Padden, Brett Tafoya and Reiley Gaddis

set the tone on offense while Ted Zoerner, Nick Belinda and Ben

Glabman anchored the defense.

Briggs D’Eliscu, R.J. Reid and Tharin Dresher-Hurst played solid

on both ends of the field. Jack Rapillo was out of town.

* Green Hornets vs. Soccer Krabs

Blake Jessen scored five goals for the Green Hornets and Ben

Bockrath added three more in the game against the Soccer Krabs.

Luke Shea, Mathew Weisner and Wyatt Devine kept the ball from the

Soccer Krabs. Sean Wilson, Carter Scott, Duke Danell-Walker and Brian

Shaw assisted on both offense and defense.
