Whittman tops Tars’ honorees
Newport Harbor High junior goalie Amanda Whittman highlights the
Sailors three repeat first-team All-Sunset League field hockey
selections by being named Most Valuable Goalie by league coaches.
Whittman, who posted 18 shutouts in 23 games, 11 in 14 league
contests, is joined on the first team for the second straight year by
senior front liner Kaley Nix and junior Jill Whitfield.
Juniors Dana Owad and Tiffany Vandersloot are also first-team
honorees for the Sailors, who finished 18-1-4 and reached their third
straight Tournament of Champions title game.
Newport Harbor juniors Karrie Gates and Kristen Jendrusina are
second-team selections.
Nix, the league’s Co-Offensive Player of the Year as a junior,
scored a team-high 15 goals this season. She also added six assists.
Owad, who sparkled on the back line and at midfield, was the
Sailors’ most consistent player, Coach Sharon Wolfe said.
Whitfield, who played primarily in the center midfield, had two
goals and one assist, while Vandersloot, primarily a defender, had
four goals this season.
Gates had four goals and six assists, while Jendrusina had 6 1/2
goals and 2 1/2 assists.
