The Who has a solid breakfast

Four different scorers for The Who and strong defense helped in

the 4-0 victory over the Honey Nut Cheerios in Boys under-14 soccer

play in AYSO Region 97. The Who advance to area play.

Travis Kuhns converted a free kick for the first goal followed by

a single goal from Will Atwood and a third-quarter score from

Jonathan Gordon.

Jamie Gayley tallied the final score. Timothy Regan and Vinnie

Finn played tough at midfield and Juan Trujillo turned away shots on

goal with help on defense from Nick Normandin, Christian Harrison,

Jacob Silverman and Michael Perkins.

Jon Gordon and Tobin Olson each scored for The Who in a game the

previous week against the Smurfs.

Trujillo and Regan each made three saves each. Regan slide tackled

the ball away from a Smurf player 35 yards from the goal to help

start a counterattack.

Brandon Parole played a strong game at sweeper as well.

Slammin’ Smurfs 1, Beach Bums 0

The Smurfs clinched first place in Boys under-14 play with the win.

They are one of two Region 97 teams in area playoffs against Costa

Mesa, Corona del Mar, North and South Irvine, Tustin and Yorba Linda.

Kyle Caldwell scored the lone goal in the first quarter. Robert

DiFrancesco, Will Reichenstein, Kyle Fults, Rex Nelson, Ben Swift and

Andrew Kaban showed speed and accurate passing.

Both teams showed solid defense. Smurf goalkeeper Tommy Olson made

some key saves, including one on a penalty kick.

Brandon Rowley, Chris Gutierrez and Jordan Hovis turned back Beach

Bum attacks and Sean Marshall, Phil Garrett and Edgar Torres covered

the backfield.

In Boys under-12 play:

Patriots 1, Rebels 0

The Patriots defeated the Rebels for the championship with Jay

Ordaz scoring the lone goal.

Offense for the Patriots was provided by Christopher Cowie, Peter

Nguyen and Jackson Carmack. Chris O’Campo played steady throughout

and midfielders Jay Wilson, Randall Hause, Preston Wheeler and Tommy

Freeman kept the ball in the offensive zone.

Defenders Irving Torres, Daron Arnold, Spencer Baratto and Wil

Curiel helped hold the Rebels scoreless and Joshua Bowman played

solid at goalkeeper.

The Patriots ended the Rebels’ nine-game unbeaten streak with the

shutout.

The Patriot defense played aggressively, putting two and three

defenders against the Rebel front line of Corey Bell-Wheelans, Cort

Adler and Eric Holland.

The Rebel midfield of Alex Allione, Josh Duerhing, Cameron Conway,

Nick Vlahakis and Levi Rowe worked well together.

Patriot kicks exercised the Rebel fullback line of Jeff Fichtner,

Evan Call and Nathan Dickey and they eventually exploited a seam in

the defense to create the winning shot.

Rebel sweeper Will Munoz made some long passes, booted corner

kicks and ran down opposing attackers. Goalkeepers Tim Barela and

John Ryder shared duties and played steady.

The Patriots defeated the Blue Man Group in an overtime shootout

in the semifinals.

Ordaz scored two goals and Wheeler added one goal for the victors.

The two teams were tied, 3-3 at the end of regulation.

Carmack and Ordaz scored two goals in the shootout period with

O’Campo, Cowie and Nguyen playing strong offensively.

Midfielders Hause, Freeman, Wheeler and Torres passed the ball to

keep control of the game and defenders Curiel, Torres, Arnold and

sweeper Baratto supported goalkeeper Bowman.

Rebels 4, Panthers 3

The Rebels survived a double-overtime, semifinal game with the

Panthers to take the win Saturday.

Holland scored two goals and Duerhing as well as Munoz added one

goal each for the Rebels, who received help at the forward position

from Adler and Bell-Wheelans.

The second half was a midfield battle led waged by Rowe, Conway,

Duerhing, Allione and Vlahakis.

Defenders Fichtner, Call and Dickey delayed the speedy Panther

forwards and kept the ball from Rebel goalkeepers Ryder and Barela.

Munoz patrolled the backfield and contributed several corner kicks

and scored late in regulation to tie it.

Bell-Wheelans started the winning scoring drive in overtime with a

cross to Holland.

Patriots 4, Hurricanes 1

Ordaz continued his torrid scoring with three more goals and

O’Campo tallied one goal in the quarterfinal game.

Wheeler, Cowie and Curiel contributed to the win along with

midfielders Carmack, Freeman, Wilson, Bowman and Hause. They all

passed well.

Defenders Baratto, Arnold, Nguyen and Torres were tough in the

backfield and keepers Wheeler and Bowman stopped shots in goal.

Four second-half goals spurred the Patriots to a three-goal win.

The Hurricanes played aggressive defense nonetheless with Harrison

Faigen and J.P. Muller along with key interceptions by Justin

McLaren.

Max Collins and Mick Sheehan both played their strongest games of

the seasons.

Easton Giedt scored on a left cross into the net for the

Hurricanes on a pass from Christian Scott. Simon Hedrick advanced the

ball throughout the game into Patriot territory.

Hurricanes 2, Bruins 1

The Hurricanes won in a shootout after the teams ended regulation

tied, 1-1.

Christian Scott and Derek Boler booted shots past the Bruin goalie

giving the Hurricanes the win. Grady Kough tied the game 1-1 on a

pass from Muller in the fourth quarter.

Muller and Faigen pelted the Bruin goalie with shots and Morgan

Lintz played a strong sweeper.

Hurricane goalie Jordan McLaren blocked a Bruin shot seconds

before the sudden death overtime period ended, sending the game into

a shootout.

Robby Hampton anchored the Hurricane goal in the shootout,

allowing only one goal.

In Boys under-10 play:

Newcastle 6, Blue Blasters 2

Newcastle took a 5-0 lead at the half and went on to win the

championship Sunday.

The Blasters battled hard in the second half with Caleb Candelaria

and C.J. Tona each scoring goals.

The Blue Blasters finish in second ahead of the Galaxy (3rd) and

the Cheetahs (4th).

Blue Blasters 6, Cheetahs 4

The Blasters defeated the Cheetahs earlier Sunday to advance to

the finals.

Candelaria and Craig McKennon each scored two goals with help from

halfbacks Paul Weisinger and Paul Tadross.

The Blasters led, 4-1 at the half.

Candelaria and Jake Likich traded positions in the fourth quarter

and held the Cheetahs to one goal in the period.

Blue Blasters 4, Volcanoes 2

The Blue Blasters beat the Volcanoes Saturday to win their pool

division.

McKennon and Candelaria each had two goals to lift the Blasters

from a 2-2 tie at halftime.

Blaster forwards included Tona, McKennon and Candelaria with

halfback help from Weisinger and Tadross.

Sweeper Brecht Van’t Hof played strong defense throughout and

fullback duties were handled by Cory Fults, Likich and Ryan Shannon.

Shannon and Likich alternated goalkeeper duties.

The Blasters swept their pool, outscoring their opponents, 13-3 in

that span.

Blue Bombers 4, Team 12 0

Two goals from Nolan Mena and one each from Regan and Urquiza

spearheaded a Bomber win.

Piazza played a strong goalkeeper and defensive standouts were

turned in by Vorona and Ryan Davidson.

Stanley, Beal and Murray controlled the midfield.

Galaxy 4, Cheetahs 2

The Galaxy won the consolation championship with a win over the

Cheetahs.

Strong passing between Hamilton Randall, Christian Ochoa and John

Barton led to goals by all three players.

Adam Kinder and Kelly Blake made several key stops to start fast

breaks and Connor Kelly anchored the strong side defense.

Trent Brown, Craig Tozer and Deric Hensley supported at defense.

Goalie Logan Friend turned away 95% of the shots on goal.

Newcastle defeated the Galaxy in semifinal action.

Ochoa, Kinder and Barton controlled the offensive end while Kelly

Blake, Trent Brown and Hensley played tough man-to-man defense.

Kelly, Friend and Tozer minimized scoring chances for Newcastle.

Killer Bees 4, Stars and Stripes 0

Timmy Root scored three goals and Jordan Desguin added another to

lead the Bees in the shutout.

Solid defense was provided by Max Caitlin, Vincent Aqueveque,

Austin Knott and Bradley Gustafson.

Stefano Nark, Chris Whitelegge and Griff Aimes helped move the

ball upfield with solid passing.

Fighting Ninjas 3, Blue Bombers 0

One goal each by Matthew Buchanan, Dustin Ayres and Stevie

Michaelsen led the Ninjas in the shutout in their second game

Saturday.

Midfield support from Jake Turner and James Jarvis kept the ball

down field.

Zach Buie made a strong throw-in to assist Michaelsen in his goal.

The Blue Bombers played with only eight members, but put up a

strong defense.

Marco Piazza and Marco Urquiza shared goalkeeper duties with

strong midfield play coming from Kyle Regan, Brodi Beal and Slater

Stanley.

Offensive support came from Ethan Murray, David Vorona and Ryan

Davidson.

Fighting Ninjas 2, Surf Monkeys 1

Buchanan and Taylor Wildman each tallied one goal apiece for the

Ninjas in their one-goal win over the Surf Monkeys in double

overtime. Buchanan scored the game-winner in the middle of the second

overtime period.

Grant Frazier made several saves in goal and was helped on defense

from Buie, Ridley and Ayres.

In Boys under-8 play:

The Golden Snitches vs. Hornets

The Snitches played their final game of the season against the

Hornets Saturday and received some strong performances.

The defense was led by Chase Kapana, who also shined offensively,

and Pierce Ward and Izaak Lofgren. Ward and Lofgren both defended the

goal well and Kyle Flagg showed lots of speed at sweeper.

Steve Keenan moved the ball well and passed strongly at midfield

with Nicholas Justice leading the assault on goal.

At several times Hornet players such as William Fuchs, Max

Johnson, Luke Rockwell and Josh Bullock donned Snitch jerseys to even

out the teams.

In Boys under-7 action:

Laser Dragons vs. Cheetahs

The Laser Dragons closed out the season with a solid performance

against the Cheetahs.

Forwards Joey Gregory, Peter Kwock, Grant Moore, Shaun Vetrovec

and Jack Williamson kept the offensive pressure and made accurate

passes.

Ian MacInnis and Cole Chapin anchored a solid defense and

goalkeepers Brandon Beck and Rian Atherton blocked away several

Cheetah shots.

Blue Dragons vs. Black Hawks

The Dragons received a solid team effort against the Black Hawks.

Christian Sandoval scored a goal for the Dragons and Zachary

Buggelin, Samuel Jones and Bryan Shollin made some key kicks. Timothy

McGetrick and Marco Bruscia added some solid passes.

The Dragons also include Ivan Dhuy, Jacob Farwell and Jackson

Sanders.

In Boys under-6 play:

Shooters vs. Raptors

The Shooters and Raptors battled all the way until the end.

Mikey Lugo assisted Landon Knight for the first goal and Davis

Hanscom scored the final goal of the season.

Wills Johnson, Johnny Connelly, Ryan Braun, Thomas Quinn, Griffith

Clawson, Michael Ischinger and Coach Jeff Braun along with Robert

Clawson contributed throughout the season.

The Green Hornets played a scrimmage because their opponents

didn’t show up.

The team scored 15 goals with Ben Bockrath and Blake Jensen

tallying multiple scores along with Wyatt Devine, Duke Danell-Walker,

Matthew Wiesner, Sean Wilson, Bryant Putnam, Luke Shea and Brian

Shaw.
