Anteaters rumble to 70-67 victory

UC Irvine’s women’s basketball team was a 70-67 winner over

William & Mary Saturday at the University of New Mexico Tournament in

Albuquerque.

Christina Callaway, with a career-high 24 points, and Lisa

Faulkner, with a career-high nine assists, paved the way for the

Anteaters, who improved to 2-1.

The Anteaters trailed, 61-54, with 6:50 left when they went on a

7-0 run to tie it at 61 with 4:28 left.

Two William & Mary free throws interrupted the run, then UCI

jumped to a 68-63 lead with 1:55 left and did not relinguish the

lead.

Vanguard rolls, 91-62

Vanguard University’s men’s basketball team was a 91-62 winner

over Hope International at the Point Loma Classic, improving to 4-2.

Brendon Cotter scored 19 points to pave the way for the Lions, who

jumped to a 48-31 halftime lead and were never threatened.

Hope International lost the battale of turnevers, 25-12, and fell

to 0-4.

Orange Coast College’s women’s basketball team (5-2) meets Contra

Costa for the Ventura Tournament championship today at 4 p.m.

following Saturday’s 63-48 victory over host Ventura, ranked No. 1 in

the state.

The Pirates broke away from a 27-26 halftime lead behind the

scoring of Liz Mendoza (16), Alisa Carrillo (12) and Nancy Hatsushi

(11).

The Pirates got a late start (after 9 p.m.) Friday, but finished

San Jose CC off quickly with a 60-40 victory to move into Saturday’s

semifinal.

Liz Mendoza (14), Nancy Hatsushi (13), Alisa Carrillo (11) and

Kirsten Vontungeln (10) paced a balanced attack.

Orange Coast College’s men’s basketball team held off Rio Hondo,

74-70, to gain a fifth-place final berth against LA Trade Tech today

at 2 p.m. at the Citrus Tournament.

Saturday’s victory was keyed by the scoring of Jason Garey (17),

Alfonso James (12) and Stephon Seales (12).

The Pirates, who lost to East Los Angeles in the first round on

Friday, 71-61, improved to 3-3 with Saturday’s victory.
