Senior running back Keola Asuega and senior noseguard Borotha Pov,

who led Costa Mesa High to the Golden West League championship,

headline 20 Costa Mesa and Estancia players on the coaches’

all-league football team.

Asuega, who amassed 1,247 yards and 15 touchdowns on 164 carries

in six league games, all Mesa victories, is the league’s Most

Valuable Player. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Asuega was a second-team

all-league pick as a junior.

Pov, a 5-11, 315-pounder who earned double- and triple-teams from

opposing blockers while clogging up the center of the neutral zone,

is the league’s Defensive Player of the Year.

Costa Mesa is represented by eight other first-team performers,

while Estancia has two first-team selections.

There are seven Mustangs and one Eagle on the second team.

Among the first-team honorees from Costa Mesa is senior offensive

guard Andrew Carich, the only local repeat first-team selection.

He is joined on the first-team offense by fellow Mesa linemen

Andrew Sapolu and Rodrigo Gutierrez.

Mustangs on the first-team defense include linebackers Chris Reed

and Junior Epenesa, cornerback Luis Gonzalez, safety Tyler Waldron

and defensive end Marc Daniels.

Senior center Joseph Hernandez and versatile senior Lewis

Bradshaw, recognized this season as a punter, are also first-team

picks.

Bradshaw earned second-team all-league laurels as a junior

defensive back.

The second-team defense includes Mesa inside linebacker Jeremy

Via, outside linebacker Daniel Cooper and cornerback Al Rodriguez, as

well as Estancia senior defensive end Erik Andersen.

Costa Mesa junior running back Omar Ruiz is a second-team choice

on offense, as are Mustangs James Paulsen (tackle), Nate Hunter

(punter) and Tim Iller (quarterback).

Senior running back Durrell Moss, who led Orange to a second-place

finish, is the Offensive Player of the Year.
