UCI women rally for 68-61 victory

UC Irvine’s women’s basketball team rallied from a 53-43 deficit

with a 10-point run, then outscored host University of San Diego,

15-8, down the stretch on the way to a 68-61 nonconference victory

Tuesday night.

The Anteaters, who improved to 3-1, were ignited by Lauren Yadon’s

burst in the 10-point run when she scored four points rebounds and an

assist in that span.

Kristin Thawley led the way with a career-high 15 points, and the

‘Eaters had five others in double figures -- Wendy Gabbe, Christina

Callaway and Lisa Faulkner with 11 points each, and Yadon and Kristen

Green with 10 points each.

Lions stun Biola, 69-58

Vanguard University’s women’s basketball team was a 69-58 winner

over visiting Biola Tuesday night in Golden State Athletic Conference

play.

The Lions had five players in double figures -- Lacey Mills with

15, followed by Deborah Candelaria (13), Jennifer Wilcox (12) and

Paulette Seaman and Jesica Lenderman with 10 each.

Vanguard improves to 5-4, 2-0 in the GSAC. Biola, which entered

with a No. 12 ranking in the NAIA, fell to 4-1, 1-1.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Mesa rolls, 58-40

Costa Mesa High senior Rhondi Naff scored a game-high 18 points,

including seven in the first quarter, leading the Mustangs’ girls

basketball team to a 58-40 victory over St. Bernard in the

consolation quarterfinals of the Mayfair Tournament Tuesday in

Lakewood.

Mesa junior Susana Trujillo, who scored 14 points, also added

seven in the first quarter, when the Mustangs (1-1) built a 21-5

lead. Trujillo also finished with three three-pointers, while

sophomore Kally Kibin scored six and nailed two from beyond the arc.

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS SOCCER

Sailors fall, 3-1

The Newport Harbor High girls soccer team was outscored 2-0 in the

second half and lost, 3-1, to nonleague visitor Edison Tuesday, in

the season opener for both teams.

Sailors’ senior Tricia Orth scored in the 23rd minute off a corner

kick, to tie the score, 1-1. But Edison found the back of the net,

later in the 48th minute and then again in the 79th to collect the

victory.

Newport junior goalie Kara DeMille recorded six saves.

The Sailors will return to action Thursday at 2:45 p.m. when they

face Capistrano Valley in the Mater Dei Tournament at Centennial Park

in Santa Ana.

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS SOCCER

Mesa wins opener, 2-1

Costa Mesa High’s girls soccer team opened its season on the right

foot with a 2-1 nonleague win over visiting Rosary Tuesday at Costa

Mesa High.

Jasmin Day kicked the game-winning goal on a pass from Sharon Day

to give the Mustangs (1-0) the win.

“Sharon made a beautiful move on the right win to beat two players

on the dribble to draw the goalie out and passed to Jasmin who put in

the corner of the net,” said Costa Mesa Coach Dan Johnston. “That was

a sweet goal.”

Jasmin Day also added an assist on Mesa’s first goal by Kristen

Bagwell in the 10th minute.

Kaitlyn Gentling made five saves and Kindra Bailey added one save

for Mesa in goal. Gentling played the second half and Bailey started

the game.
