Looking back, 5 years ago this week.

The Newport Harbor High boys basketball team pulls out an 89-82 triple

overtime victory over Warren Harding at the Newport, R.I. Holiday

Tournament. Danny Pulido and Adam Hearlson each sink two free throws to

put the game away in the third overtime period. Pulido and Hearlson both

finish with a game-high 21 points each. Matt Jameson adds 20 points and

dishes out six assists, while Pulido pulls down 18 rebounds.

The No. 1 sports story for the Daily Pilot is, “George Yardley reaches

the Basketball Hall of Fame.” The Newport Beach resident, a two-time

college Player of the Year at Stanford, toils seven season for the Fort

Wayne and Detroit Pistons, as well as for Syracuse. Yardley, out of

Newport Harbor High Class of 1946, plays as a 6-foot-5 forward.

The Corona del Mar boys soccer team shuts out Servite, 1-0, the Sea

Kings’ fifth straight shutout of the season. Justin Anderson scores on a

breakaway off a feed from Matt Hoyt with 20 minutes left in the game.

Goalkeeper Ken Brown helps produce the shutout, along with the help of

the Back Bay four, Robert Klase, Pat Shanahan, Jared Jones and Zack

Zarrilli. The Sea Kings also shut out Villa Park, 2-0 later in the week.

CdM scores both of its goals in the second half. Klase and Hoyt score one

goal each to provide the difference.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week.

The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team wins the Santiago

Tournament with a 50-34 victory over El Modena. Kala Ross, who is named

the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, leads all scorers with 22

points, while sidekick Maureen McLaren adds 13 points.

The Estancia boys basketball team improves to an 11-3 record after a

68-37 victory over Brea-Olinda. Matt Fuerbringer scores a game-high 22

points. Jim Faulkner adds 11 points, while Jeff Byrne scores 13. The

Eagles build a 30-23 halftime lead and Fuerbringer gets them off to a

good start in the third quarter. He scores nine points in Estancia’s 20-2

run that basically ends the game.

The Estancia girls soccer team shuts out host Valencia, 2-0. Danielle

Straub sparks the offense, scoring both goals for the Eagles. Goalkeeper

Kristina Grigitas anchors the defense, stopping three shots.

Jeremy Loflin, Jorge Rubio and Matt Knudsen win consolation

championships, a fifth-place finish each, in the Estancia Tournament.

Loflin (189-pound weight class division) secures fifth place by a

forfeit, while Rubio (135), Estancia’s team captain and four-year

letterman, wins by decision, 8-4. Knudsen (171) finishes fifth with a 5-2

win in the consolation final. Costa Mesa’s Ryan Park (heavyweight) is

disqualified in the championship semifinals for head-butting. Park pins

all three of his opponents in the earlier rounds.
