Seconds for Costa Mesa

Hawthorne proved to be Costa Mesa’s nemesis last weekend.

It defeated Mesa twice in the Newport Beach AYSO Thanksgiving

Tournament, including a 3-0 verdict in the championship game in Boys

under-19 AYSO soccer action.

Costa Mesa completed its 2002 fall season with a second-place

finish in the weekend tournament, going 2-2 with two shutout wins.

Mesa ends the season, 8-3-5.

Costa Mesa defeated Granada Hills, 2-0 Friday, on goals by Noe

Martinez and Jason Cassidy, who assisted on Martinez’ goal. Cassidy

tallied three goals in Mesa’s four tournament games.

Ryan Underwood and Cassidy accounted for Mesa’s scoring in Mesa’s

2-0 victory against La Mirada Sunday morning.

Mesa opened the weekend tournament Friday with a 3-2 loss to

Hawthorne on goals from Jess Helmuch (Derek Garcia with the assist)

and Cassidy.

Coach Jamie Gomez received effort throughout the season from

goalkeeper Juan Casteneda, Eric and Greg Nutter, Bernabe Ortega,

Oscar Gomez, Steven Boga, Steven Garcia and Eric Lopez.
