The Region 143 boys’ under-16 Plus soccer team notched its 20th

victory of the season last weekend and capped an unbeaten season by

defeating Tustin, 3-2, to win the AYSO Area 11 division playoff

tournament.

Region 143 netted all three of its goals in the opening half of

play.

Yuto Someya scored the first goal, and Nick Lopez scored on a hard

shot from the right side in the 16th minute for a 2-0 lead.

Andrew Long, off a well-placed corner kick by Franco Macchia,

scored the third goal.

Tustin battled back with two second-half goals, but key saves by

keeper Boden McCarthy and the defensive play of Kevin Smit, Charles

Wright-Belma and Michael Long protected Region 143’s lead.

During the 20-0 season, center striker Kevin Cizmar led Region 143

with 16 goals.

The team roster also consists of Michael Danna, Christopher

Dulgarian, Marco Escobar, Shea Klemm, Derek Lockwood, Alvaro Melchor,

Corey Mora-Petty, Bryan Sullivan and Kevin Van Straalen.

“I’ve coached a lot of teams, but this one definitely is the most

complete team I’ve ever coached,” assistant coach Ron Long said.

“They played as a team all year. They not only like each other, but

they also love to pass the ball. That makes them really hard to

beat.”
