Strikers take second

The Newport Beach Strikers Girls under-13 Progressive AYSO Soccer

team came in second in the Thanksgiving Tournament. Newport went

3-1-1, their only loss coming to Lake Forest -- a 2-1 result in the

title game.

Cassidy Gayner led the team with six goals over the five games

while Monique Gallardo, Alice Cope and Emily Ohlhaver each had two

goals. Single goals were scored by Tia Shefflette and Lyndsi Lewan.

Newport defeated North Irvine, 5-1 in Game 1, with Gayner and

Gallardo scoring two goals each and Lewan adding a header for a

score. Alex McIntosh, Andrea Aqueveque, Gayner and Gallardo were the

forwards.

The midfield was dominated by Cope, Ohlhaver, Brittany Sowers and

Lewan while Sarah Cope, Shefflette, Stephanie Nealey and goalie Maddy

McMains anchored the defense.

In Game 2, a 3-2 victory over Lake Forest, Ohlhaver, Shefflette

and Gayner scored the goals with help from forwards McIntosh and

Sowers.

Gallardo, Ohlhaver, Rachel Baugh, Cope and Lewan played steady at

midfield and McMains, Nealey, Sarah Cope and goalie Shefflette held

Lake Forest defensively.

Newport tied Lynwood, 2-2 in the third game, on two goals from

Gayner.

McIntosh, Kelly DeYoung, Gallardo and Gayner played at forward

while Alice Cope, Lewan, Kristina Heimstaedt, Sowers, Baugh, and

Ohlhaver led the midfield.

On defense, Shefflette, Nealey, Sarah Cope, Lily Dierkes,

Aqueveque and McMains in goal held Lynwood to two goals.

Newport would win its fourth game on a shootout -- 4-2 over

eventual-champion Lake Forest.

Shefflette, Ohlhaver, Alice Cope and Gayner scored on penalty

kicks.

DeYoung, Gallardo, Baugh and Gayner led at forward with Sowers,

Heimstaedt, Lewan, Ohlhaver and Alice Cope seeing time at midfield.

McMains, Nealey, Sarah Cope, Dierkes, Aqueveque and goalie

Shefflette steadied the defense.

Alice Cope scored Newport’s lone goal in a 2-1 defeat to Lake Forest for the tournament championship.

Forwards Gayner, Sowers, Baugh and DeYoung paced Newport as

forwards with assistance at midfield from Gallardo, Alice Cope,

Heimstaedt, Lewan and Ohlhaver.

On defense, Sarah Cope, Dierkes, Shefflette, Aqueveque and goalies

Nealey and McMains were sharp.
