Sailors kicks Oilers around

Newport Harbor High attacked and was rewarded with a 4-1 nonleague

win over host Huntington Beach Friday in boys soccer play.

The Sailors (1-1) took a 3-0 lead in the first half on two goals

from Joel Walker and one goal from Eduardo Garcia before the Oilers

scored on a penalty kick.

Jose Serpas scored his second goal of the season in the second

half when he took control of the ball at midfield and sped straight

toward the net to launch a shot that found the back of the goal, said

Newport Coach Martyn Hansford.

“He split through two or three defenders,” Hansford said.

Will Guzman battled hard at midfield, shooting from 35 yards out

to hit the cross bar and goalkeeper Mark Spears notched two saves.

Chase Kelly sparked Newport attacks and Walker provided sustained

energy, Hansford said.

“Attack-wise we looked a lot better,” he said. “We still need to

be more patient with the ball.”

Tars fall, 1-0

SOCCER: The Newport Harbor High Sailors are still looking for

their first win in girls soccer after a 1-0 defeat at the hands of

Esperanza Friday in the Mater Dei Tournament at Centennial Park.

Newport (0-3) and the Aztecs went into halftime tied, 0-0, before

Esperanza broke the tie with a goal in the 58th minute.

Sailor keeper Kara DeMille had two saves on three Aztec shots.

Newport pelted Esperanza’s keeper with four shots.

Lightning wins, 2-0

SOCCER: Sage Hill High freshman Zack Milder scored one goal and

added an assist to help lead the Lightning boys soccer team to a 2-0

season-opening victory over the Army/Navy Academy from Carlsbad

Friday at Sage Hill.

Sage Hill senior Zack Friedrichs scored the Lightning’s first goal

in the 13th minute, after finishing an assist from Milder. Then, 21

minutes later, Milder scored off an assist from junior Braden

Barnett. Sage Hill goalies Ethen Thanney (eight saves) and Trevor

Granger (six saves) combined for the shutout.

Eagles denied, 5-0

SOCCER: Estancia High boys soccer coach Steve Crenshaw said the

Eagles dominated, but made way too many mistakes that resulted in a

5-0 loss to nonleague host Marina Friday.

“Frustrating,” Crenshaw said of the loss. “We dominated them. They

didn’t make it over the half line for the first 10 minutes of the

game. But, all they did was capitalize off our mistakes. Every one of

their goals came from our mistakes.”

Crenshaw also said seniors Javier Millan, Jason Cassidy and

Rodrigo Duarte played well, but the Eagles (1-2) committed too many

errors. Estancia trailed, 3-0, at halftime.

Sage Hill girls roll

BASKETBALL: Three players scored in double figures for the Sage

Hill High girls basketball team in a 40-point Lightning romp over

visiting Eastside Christian Friday night.

Katie Puishys led the Lightning (2-0) with 16 points while both

Haywood Wright and Carrie Clark scored 13 points.

After what Sage Hill Coach Shanna Renkin termed a “sluggish

start,” the Lightning found their rhythm in the second quarter, not

allowing a single point to Eastside Christian.

“We picked it up big time in the second quarter,” Renkin said.

Shooting guard Carly Clark added five assists, Renkin said, and

got the ball in low to Sage Hill post players such as Puishys and

Wright.

“I’ve never seen Carly play that good,” Renkin said. “She

controlled the game with great passes into the post.”

Renkin was also impressed with Allison Gonzalez, who tallied four

points.

“(Gonzalez) is so athletic and tonight she got on the wing and was

not scared of taking shots,” Renkin said .”She took eight of them and

that is great. She doesn’t have a lot of experience playing but (the

shots) will fall.”
