Krikorian sparks Mesa in second half
Costa Mesa High senior guard Danny Krikorian scored 15 of his
game-high 22 points in the second half Monday night as the Mustangs’
boys basketball team defeated St. Paul, 52-45, in the first round of
pool play in the Valley Christian Tournament.
Mesa (2-0) outscored the Swordsmen in the fourth quarter, 15-9,
after leading, 37-36, at third quarter’s end. Krikorian sank 11 of 15
free throws, 9 of 11 in the second half. Jeff Waldron led Costa Mesa
with seven rebounds. Kevin Dyer led St. Paul with 18 points. Mesa
will play La Salle Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Valley Christian.

Mission Viejo edges Newport Harbor
Newport Harbor High junior standout Jill Whitfield scored 18
points and grabbed eight rebounds, but Mission Viejo rallied in the
fourth quarter to defeat the Sailors, 54-46, in a consolation-round
game Monday night in the University girls basketball tournament.
The Diablos (1-2) outscored the Sailors (1-2) in the fourth
quarter, 21-13, after the game was tied at third quarter’s end at 33.
Newport Harbor senior guard Athena Vasquez had four steals. Senior
Lindsey Woller contributed five rebounds. The Sailors face Tesoro in
a consolation game Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Eagles’ Mendoza earns hat trick
Estancia High sophomore Luis Mendoza, playing forward for the
first time Monday after being switched from the midfield by Coach
Steve Crenshaw, scored all three goals as the host Eagles defeated
Fountain Valley, 3-1, in nonleague boys soccer action.
Mendoza scored in the 15th and 32nd minutes, then capped his hat
trick with a goal in the second half in the 65th minute. “We moved
him up to the front and it was productive,” Crenshaw said.
Estancia will host Laguna Beach in a nonleague game Wednesday at
3:15 p.m.
