NEWPORT BEACH -- Newport Harbor High’s club surfing team, unbeaten

in dual meets, finished second to Los Alamitos at the Sunset League

Finals Tuesday morning at the 56th Street site.

Newport’s timing, as was the weather, was just off championship

performances as 4- 6-foot waves with excellent form very early in day

disintegrated to 2- 4-foot waves and virtually blown out by the time

the 22 heats of surfing was completed.

Behind the 1-2 finish of Los Alamitos and Newport Harbor were

Laguna Beach, Calvary Chapel, Mater Dei and Santa Margarita.

Newport won the short board with a total of 9 out of 21 points.

Advancing from the six prelim heats for Newport were senior Will

Anderson (third), senior Geoff Rill (first), freshman Brighton

Brandenburger (first), senior Alex Knost (third), senior David Neira

(second), and junior Tom Holbrook (second).

Advancing from the quarterfinals in heat 1 were Holbrook (first)

and Anderson (second), heat 2 Rill (third), heat 3 Brandenburger

(first) and Neira (second).

Advancing from the semifinal heats were Anderson (first), and

Neira (second) from heat one and Rill (first) from heat 2.

In the finals Rill was second, Anderson fourth, and Neira sixth.

Newport was second in the long board losing to Los Alamitos.

Advancing from semifinal heat 2 was freshman Chase Smith (second).

In the finals Smith was third, with Los Al. taking first and second.

Newport was fourth in body board, losing to Los Alamitos which was

first.

Advancing from the semi final heat 1 was senior Dan Kretschmar

(first). In the finals Kretschmar was fourth.

Newport won the girls long/short board division with a total of 10

of 21 points. Advancing from the semifinal round was senior Amy Lowry

(first) in heat 1 and sophomore Erica Hosseini (second) in heat 2.

In the finals Hosseini and Lowry went 1-3.

Next for Newport is a nonleague match against Edison at Huntington

Beach at 9th Street on December 12, the first of five nonleague

matches leading up to the state championships at the Trestles March

15-16.
