Sage Hill girls rack up third straight win

BASKETBALL: Sage Hill High freshman Haywood Wright had a

career-high 18 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Lightning to a

50-28 nonleague girls basketball victory over visiting Fairmont

Tuesday.

Wright, a 6-foot forward, helped Sage Hill (3-0) exploit a height

advantage, as did 6-2 center Katie Puishys, who had five points.

Carrie Clark added 11 points for the winners, who won five games

all of last season.

The Lightning opens the eight-team Fairmont Tournament Thursday

against Buena Park at 3 p.m.

SOCCER: Corona del Mar was a 1-0 winner over visiting Cypress High

in nonleague boys soccer Tuesday.

The Sea Kings gained the winning edge when Jarrett Thayer

connected from about 18 yards out in the 11th minute. Jay Zimmerman

was credited with five saves for Corona del Mar, which improved to

3-0.

Corona del Mar is at Huntington Beach Friday in another nonleague

match, starting at 3:15 p.m.

Mesa girls win, 3-2

SOCCER: Costa Mesa High’s girls soccer team survived a physical

duel with host Aliso Niguel Tuesday night en route to the Mustangs’

fourth win in five starts.

It came with a price as goalkeeper Kindra Bailey, who had four

saves in the first half, left the field with 10 minutes to go before

halftime with three broken fingers. An Aliso Niguel player suffered a

dislocated ankle in another mishap. Bailey’s status is uncertain.

Jenny Sparks scored two goals and freshman Jasmin Day had one

goal, while her sister, Sharon, had two assists. Vera Gale had the

other assist.

Mesa trailed at halftime, 2-1.

“Everyone really played well,” said Costa Mesa Coach Dan Johnston.

“We really got our running game going.”

Kaitlyn Gentling finished up in goal and also had four saves.

Costa Mesa is at Irvine Thursday, starting at 5 p.m.

CdM girls fall, 1-0

SOCCER: Corona del Mar High’s girls soccer team dropped to 1-1

with a 1-0 nonleague loss at Mission Viejo Tuesday.

The Sea Kings, who outshot Mission, 8-5, and had a chance to tie

the game in the 65th minute when Elisha Morgan had a point-blank shot

opportunity, simply fell victim to a great save by the Mission Viejo

goalie. Mission improved to 3-1-1.

CdM goalie Rachel Waters had seven saves.

Corona del Mar hosts Ocean View on Thursday at 3:15.

Sage Hill girls bow, 3-1

SOCCER: Sage Hill dropped a 3-1 nonleague girls soccer decision at

Calvary Chapel Downey Tuesday, falling to 0-4 on the year.

Ashley Negrette scored Sage Hill’s only goal in the second half.

Laura Gordon had 16 saves.

The Lightning hosts Sunny Hills Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

GIRLS POLO: Sage Hill High’s girls water polo team dropped a 15-2

nonleague decision to Garden Grove Tuesday night at Corona del Mar.

Hayden Hutchinson scored both of the Lightning’s goals.

The junior varsity was a 5-1 winner.

Sage Hill’s water polo team hosts Webb Friday night at 7.
