Newport student OK after accident

A Newport Harbor High School student suffered minor injuries

Wednesday morning after she was hit by a car while crossing the

street near school, officials said.

The 14-year-old girl, whose name was not released because she is a

minor, was trying to cross 20th Street at Tustin Avenue when

39-year-old Eric Kinnsch, traveling eastbound on 20th, hit her,

police said.

She was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana to be checked

for internal injuries, Costa Mesa Police Lt. Dale Birney said.

“There was no indication she had suffered any injuries,” he said.

“There were no broken bones or no major injuries.”

Birney said the only injury officers reported was that the girl

was bleeding from the nose.

He said the accident likely happened because Kinnsch’s windows

were fogged up and he could neither see the stop sign at the

intersection nor the girl crossing the street.

Kinnsch received a citation for not stopping at a stop sign and

driving at an “unsafe speed.” Although he was driving at 20 to 25

mph, Birney said it was an unsafe speed because his view was hindered

by the fogged-up windows.
