Applicants sought for city commissions

The Costa Mesa City Council seeks letters of interest from

residents interested in serving on the Planning and Parks and

Recreation commissions. Terms for all existing members now serving on

the commissions will expire in March. Members serve two-year,

non-staggered terms.

The five-member Planning Commission has the power to decide or

make recommendations to the council on issues relating to the city’s

future growth and development. The five-member Parks and Recreation

Commission began in 1990 to consider issues, programs, fees and

studies relating to parks and recreation facilities.

Interested persons should submit a letter of interest and brief

resume by Jan. 8 to Mayor Karen Robinson, City Hall, P.O. Box 1200

(77 Fair Drive) Costa Mesa, CA 92628-1200.

New Costa Mesa Spa hosts grand opening

Tropica Spa will have its grand opening Thursday through Sunday.

As part of the promotion, the spa will offer a one-hour stone therapy

session for $39, regularly priced at $70. The offer is available

through Dec. 31.

The spa, at 2075 Newport Blvd., Suite 101, specializes in stone

therapy massage that combines the benefits of massage with hot stone

therapy. The warmth of heated stones can draw the tension out of the

body as the therapist combines relaxation, circulatory and trigger

point massage techniques.

The spa also provides custom Swedish and other specialty massages,

scrubs and mud masks.

Newport-Mesa La Salsa eateries host toy drive

La Salsa Fresh Mexican Grill is holding a toy and food drive to

benefit Share Our Selves, a Costa Mesa-based nonprofit. The public is

encouraged to bring unwrapped toys, nonperishable food items and

donations to participating restaurants. The Costa Mesa restaurant is

at 279 E. 17th St., and the Newport Beach restaurant is at 4341

MacArthur Blvd.

La Salsa will also donate a portion of the proceeds from every

holiday party platter sold in Orange County through the month of

December to Share Our Selves. In addition, it will feed 75 Share Our

Selves volunteers who will man the organization’s Adopt-A-Family

donation drive Dec. 19 at the Orange County Fairgrounds.

Food and toy drive on at Someone Cares

The Someone Cares soup kitchen in Costa Mesa needs donated food

and unwrapped toys to benefit local families in need. Volunteers are

also needed.

Last Christmas, Someone Cares gave more than 3,000 new toys to

children and served more than 3,200 meals. The soup kitchen is trying

to raise money for its holiday giveaways.
