Corona del Mar rips Peninsula

As a girls water polo coach, Corona del Mar High substitute Sam

Bailey could retire undefeated.

That is, unless his one-time stint Wednesday filling in for Aaron

Chaney opens the door to a coaching career.

The host Sea Kings made Bailey look good as they defeated

Peninsula, 13-3, in a nonleague game, after taking a 10-0 halftime

lead.

“The girls have been working so hard all week long, because they

want their coach to know that they’ve been working hard in his

absence and that it hasn’t been a waste of time,” said Bailey, a

former San Clemente and UCLA water polo standout who is now a

substitute teacher in the Newport-Mesa School District. Chaney, in

Australia with the U.S. national team, will return next week in time

for CdM’s nonleague game against Villa Park Dec. 18.

Stanford-bound CdM senior Christina Hewko scored four goals to

lead the winners, including the first goal 1:16 into the game from

six meters. CdM senior Danielle Carlson scored on a pass from Daniela

DiGiacomo on the counterattack to give the Sea Kings a 2-0 edge, a

play later followed by goals from UCLA-bound senior Brittney Bowlus

and DiGiacomo -- both on the counterattack.

Hewko scored again with 0:38 left in the first quarter, after

stealing the ball and swimming solo to the other end, then scored

another counterattack goal with 0:08 remaining.

In the second quarter, junior Vivian Liao, sophomore Jordan Anae,

senior Jessica Harkins and junior Katya Eadington scored goals for

Corona del Mar (2-0), while Sea King goalkeeper Brittany Fullen

recorded two of her five saves. Anae, Carlson, Bowlus, junior Amy

Strack and freshman Camille Hewko had steals in the second quarter

for CdM.

Christina Hewko opened the fourth quarter with a goal on an assist

from DiGiacomo 34 seconds into the period, then DiGiacomo’s

counterattack goal with 4:41 left gave the hosts a 12-2 lead. Camille

Hewko scored from 2 meters on a pass from Anae with 3:54 on the

clock. Hewko broke through two defenders to score.

In the frosh-soph game, CdM defeated Peninsula, 9-0, as Katie

Kubas scored six goals.
