Sailors rebound

The Newport Harbor girls basketball team put together a solid,

well-rounded performance to defeat Tesoro, 71-36, in the 13th-place

semifinal of the University Tournament Thursday at University High in

Irvine.

Junior Jillianne Whitfield scored a game-high 13 points and Sailor

teammates Megan Beeson and Vanessa Miller added 12 apiece for the

Sailors (2-2).

Newport Harbor will meet the University-Don Lugo winner Saturday

at 10:30 a.m. for 13th place.

Miller, a sophomore, added five rebounds, while 6-foot senior

Linsdey Woller collected seven rebounds and nine points for the

Sailors, who also received six steals and seven assists from senior

guard Athena Vasquez.

Costa Mesa wins, 55-44

Costa Mesa High’s girls basketball team was a 55-44 nonleague

winner at Tustin Thursday night, keyed by Rhondi Naff (20 points and

six rebounds) and Rickell Reeves (nine points and eight rebounds).

Stacee Sanchez also scored in double figures (10).

Sage Hill rolls, 47-33

The Sage Hill High girls basketball team remained undefeated with

a 47-33 victory over Buena Park in the opening round of the Fairmont

Tournament Thursday at Fairmont High in Anaheim.

The Lightning (4-0) had three players in double figures, including

leading-scorer Katie Puishys (15 points) while getting 13 points from

Haywood Wright and 11 points from Carrie Clark.
