WHAT HAPPENED:

The board approved the revised Board Policy 5039 governing

electronic signaling devices.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The policy permits students to have cell phones and pagers on

campus during the school day, while attending school-sponsored

activities or while under the supervision of a school district

employee. The devices must be deactivated and their use restricted to

the designated lunch period at the high school, during an officially

declared emergency affecting the school or community and upon written

direction from a licensed physician or surgeon if carrying the device

is essential to the health of the student.

WHAT HAPPENED:

The board approved the revised Board Policy 6025 governing

Independent Study.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The policy allows high school, continuation high school students

or adult education students to participate in independent study as

long as there is a written agreement that is consistent with the

policy. Students may opt for independent study when they want to

extend the content of regular courses of instruction, when they want

to study a particular field of interest that is not currently

available in the regular curriculum and when a student experiences

scheduling conflicts or a full schedule of other classes.
