Looking back, 5 years ago this week:

The Estancia High boys soccer team remains unbeaten with a 2-0

nonleague win over Calvary Chapel, despite rattling off 24 shots that

don’t find the net. The Eagles score both goals on penalty kicks --

one each by Jose Quintana and Cesar Terrones. Sophomore midfielder

Irving Islas, along with defenders German Diaz, Noe Estrada and

goalkeeper Brad Wayman, preserve the shutout.

Ten football players from Costa Mesa and Estancia High are named

first-team All-Pacific Coast League by the circuit’s coaches, while

10 locals garner second-team recognition. Mesa seniors Steve Herzog,

Vince Hamade, Ronnie Lievanos and Jeremy Via earn first-team honors

for the second year in a row after leading the Mustangs to a

second-place finish in the PCL. Estancia running back James Dawkins

earns back-to-back first-team laurels for the fourth-place Eagles.

Mesa seniors Jeremy Siedsma and Ben Felter take home first-team

honors while Estancia’s Manu Tanielu and John Liebengood, along with

Mesa’s Nam Kim, round out players named to the first team. Costa

Mesa’s Matthew Rudesill, Richard Price, Rovinn Sou, Daniel Ives,

Chris McBride, Chris Shanley and Matt Peca are second-team picks, as

are Estancia’s Mike Briano, Andy Galicia and Justin Wolter.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week:

The Orange Coast College women’s basketball team reels off its

14th straight victory in as many games to win the Coast Christmas

Classic, 65-51, over Chaffey. The Pirates trail by as many as 12 in

the first half, but stage a second-half comeback. The Bucs go on a

12-2 run to take a 41-35 lead at the outset of the second half.

Tournament Most Valuable Player Jana Davis and all-tournament

selections Ricarda Kuypers and Heather Brannan lead the charge.

Brannan leads Coast with 16 points and Colleen Hatch adds 15 points

and 10 rebounds for the winners.

The Corona del Mar High girls basketball team downs Estancia,

52-50, to claim the Estancia Classic championship. CdM’s Mollie Flint

hits a driving shot with 18 seconds left to break the tie. Flint is

selected the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, finishing with 29

points. Sea Kings Rosalie Kane and Katie Thurman also make the

all-tournament team. The Eagles lead, 50-48, with 2:07 left, after

Karla Dominguez’s steal and subsequent basket, but Kane retaliates

with a short shot in the lane to tie it at 50 with 44 seconds

remaining. Estancia has a chance to tie after Flint’s basket, but the

Eagles’ first free-throw attempt rims out and Flint grabs the

rebound.

Corona del Mar High girls volleyball standout Kim Coleman is named

CIF Southern Section Division I Co-Player of the Year along with

Laguna Beach senior Rachel Wacholder. Sea Kings’ Coach Lance Stewart

is named Coach of the Year after leading CdM (34-0) to state and

national titles. CdM’s Jennifer Stroffe and Lori Newcomer also

receive first-team All-CIF honors. Newport Harbor sophomores Misty

May and Melissa Schutz are also first-team picks after leading the

Tars to their first state title in Division III.
