Anteaters’ women collect 61-47 victory at Birmingham-Southern

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: UC Irvine’s women’s basketball team trounced

host Birmingham-Southern in nonconference play Tuesday night on the

loser’s floor at the Bill Battle Coliseum as Christina Callaway

netted 20 points and a career-high 19 rebounds, and teammate Lisa

Faulkner dished out a career-high 12 assists. Callaway connected on 9

of 20 from the floor.

The Anteaters, now 5-1, have matched the best start for a UCI

women’s basketball team since the ‘84-85 edition.

It was 37-37 with 12:22 to play when UCI went on an 8-0 run and

was never threatened after that. Birmingham-Southern fell to 3-5.

Wendy Gabbe and Kristen Green each scored 12 points for UCI, which

hosts Creighton Friday night in a nonconference duel.

Lions lose in double OT, 78-75

MEN’S BASKETBALL: The Vanguard men’s basketball team had five

players in double figures, but it was not enough as nonconference

host Cal State L.A. won after two overtimes, 78-75, Tuesday night.

Cal State L.A. outscored Vanguard, 10-7 in the second overtime

period to come out on top. Vanguard junior guard Ryan Moreau led the

Lions (4-5) with 21 points, while Conrad Adamczak (15), Josh Pierson

(14), James Hartman (12) and Tim Burnette (10) also scored in double

figures.

The Golden Eagles (3-2) were led by Ronald Johnson, who scored a

career-high 36 points. He was 11 of 20 from the field and 13 of 14

from the free-throw line.

Eagles’ Lindquist shines

BOYS BASKETBALL: Senior center Joey Lindquist amassed 25 points

and 13 rebounds to lead the Estancia High boys basketball team to a

63-46 nonleague road win over La Quinta Tuesday night.

“It was probably his most complete game as a varsity player,”

Estancia Coach Chris Sorce said of the 6-foot-7 Lindquist. “He was

very focused offensively, defensively and rebounding, he didn’t rush

things and he was very composed throughout.”

Carlos Pinto and Zack Novak added 11 points each and Pinto chipped

in six rebounds for the winners, who used a 16-2 second-quarter run

to turn a 24-20 deficit into a 36-26 halftime lead.

Estancia (5-1) closes out pool play in the Garden Grove Tournament

tonight at 7:30 against Garden Grove. That will be the third game of

a five-game week for the Eagles.

Sage Hill racks up seventh straight

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Freshman Haywood Wright and sophomore Katie

Puishys each collected 17 points and 18 rebounds to lead host Sage

Hill to a 52-20 nonleague girls basketball victory over Connelly

Tuesday.

Wright also had seven blocked shots and four steals, while Carrie

Clark had five assists for the winners, who improved to 7-0.

The Lightning hosts Saddleback Valley Christian Thursday at 5 p.m.

in another nonleague game.

Edison tops Estancia

* GIRLS BASKETBALL: The Estancia High girls basketball team

dropped a nonleague game to Edison, 36-32, at Estancia High Tuesday

night.

The Eagles (5-2) had “inconsistent scoring” as Coach Tamette Rappa

put it.

“We can’t be scoring five, 13 then two points in quarters,” said

the first-year Eagle coach.

Estancia’s two third-quarter points came on free throws.

Trisha Wase had 11 points and Nancy Castro added nine points for

the Eagles, who shot 13 for 39 from the field.

Tisha Gray scored seven points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked

two shots. Xochitl Byfield also had two blocks.

“We had a hard game last night so it might have taken some out of

us, who knows,” Rappa said.

The Eagles defeated Inglewood, 50-46 Monday, in the first round of

the Artesia Tournament and will play Long Beach Millikan at 5:25 p.m.

today at the Hawaiian Gardens Center in the second round.

Mustangs blitz Orange, 8-0

GIRLS SOCCER: In its first Golden West League game, the Costa Mesa

High girls soccer team blanked host Orange, 8-0, Tuesday.

The Mustangs, 6-1-2, 1-0-0 in league, received two goals from

Sharon Day and one goal each from Kristen Bagwell, Jasmin Day, Nilani

Duarte, Kara Jenkins, Jenny Sparks and Rachel Ronquillo in the

shutout.

Sharon Day added three assists and Jasmin Day, Stacy Krikorian and

Sparks each had one assist for the Mustangs.

Mesa fired 36 shots on Orange goalkeeper Sarah Chavez, who made 18

saves. Mustangs’ keeper Kaitlyn Gentling made no saves, touching the

ball only two times, said Mesa Coach Dan Johnston.

Rosary too much for CdM

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Corona del Mar High’s girls dropped a 76-22

decision to Rosary in the first round of the Los Alamitos Tournament

Tuesday, fallling to 2-5 oveall.

Rosary jumped to a 43-12 halftime lead and Corona del Mar was

unable to score in double figures in any quarter.

Corona del Mar continues pool play on Friday against Cerritos at 5

p.m.

Lightning drops 55-41 decision

BOYS BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill High boys basketball team succumbed

to quickness and pressure defense applied by Pacifica High of Oxnard,

which earned a 55-41 victory in the second pool-play game of the

Garden Grove Tournament Tuesday at Garden Grove High.

Sage Hill (2-6), which committed 20 turnovers, was paced by junior

Kevin Joyce (19 points) and senior Michael Fitzhugh (11 points and

eight rebounds).

The Lightning also hurt itself at the free-throw line, converting

just 6 of 18.

Sage Hill plays Saddleback in a tournament consolation game

Sailors trounce Gahr, 61-20

GIRLS BASKETBALL: The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team

surpassed its win total of last season by defeating Gahr, 61-20, in

the opening pool-play game of the Valley Christian Tournament Tuesday

at Valley Christian High in Cerritos.

Jillianne Whitfield had 12 points and Lindsey Woller added 10 to

pace a balanced attack for the Sailors (5-2). Whitfield had six

rebounds, five assists and three steals, Woller added seven rebounds

and Victoria Swigert chipped in nine points and six rebounds.

Newport, 4-20 last season, plays Whitney today at 3 in the second

of three pool-play games.

Lightning scores shutout victory

GIRLS SOCCER: The Sage Hill High girls soccer team won its first

game of the season in shutout fashion.

The Lightning (1-5) defeated Saddleback Valley Christian, 3-0, at

Sage Hill Tuesday on goals by Sara Becker, Vista Murphy and Janele

Shockley. Becker scored her goal in the first half on an assist from

Katie McKitterick to give Sage Hill a 1-0 halftime lead. Amy Werbin

crossed to Shockley for the Lightning’s final goal. Sophomore

goalkeeper Laura Gordon made five saves and Murphy played the last 12

minutes in net, said Lightning Coach Amy Ray.

“The girls played extremely tough in the second half and never

gave up,” Ray said. “Our passing was a lot better today.”

The Lightning returns to action Thursday at Fairmont at 3:15 p.m.

Mustangs fall at Rancho Alamitos

BOYS SOCCER: Luis Villa Nueva’s first-half goal proved the only

score for Costa Mesa High, which dropped a nonleague 3-1 decision to

host Rancho Alamitos Tuesday in boys soccer action.

Villa Nueva scored in the 25th minute on a rebound of a shot

Mesa’s Luis Porcayo fired on the Rancho Alamitos keeper. The Mustangs

(0-6-1) were held scoreless after leading at halftime, 1-0.

“We played well in the first half then got overly confident and

had trouble scoring,” said Mustangs’ Coach Antonio Salinas. “We need

to work on giving a team effort, giving everything we’ve got.”

Costa Mesa goalkeeper Willmer Hernandez made two saves.

Newport’s Geier sparkles at Katella

WRESTLING: Newport Harbor High’s Nate Geier, Kid Lim and Victor

George were winners in the Sailors’ nonleague dual wrestling match at

Katella Tuesday in Anaheim.

Geier improved to 5-0 with a pin in 51 seconds over Nick Tody at

135 pounds.

Lim improved to 4-2 with a pin in 3:21 over Josh Zenbier at 112

pounds, and George was a 14-8 winner by decision over Daniel Real at

103 to improve to 2-2.

Mesa absorbs 67-39 loss

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Torrance High forced 21 turnovers to help the

Tartars earn a 67-39 girls basketball victory over Costa Mesa Tuesday

in the second round of the Artesia Tournament at Santa Fe High.

Senior Rhondi Naff had 10 points and six rebounds to pace the

Mustangs (3-3), who play King Drew High today at 5:25 in the

consolation bracket of the 31-team tournament, also at Santa Fe High.

Junior Brittany Vergara had eight points for the Mustangs,

including two three-pointers.

CdM handles Villa Park, 11-7

GIRLS POLO: Corona del Mar High’s girls water polo team was an

11-7 winner at Villa Park in nonleague play Tuesday.

Danielle Carlson led the way with seven goals, five coming in the

third quarter when CdM outscored Villa Park, 5-3, to expand the lead

to 10-6. Carlson also had four steals and two assists.

Brittney Bowlus had two goals, and Christina Hewko, usually the

scoring leader, had six steals and two assists.

The Sea Kings, 3-0, host Newport Harbor on Friday at 3.

The junior varsity, led by Ashley Chandler’s five goals, two

assists and two steals, was a 12-4 winner.

The frosh-soph, keyed by Katie Kubas’ eight goals, won, 17-6.

Kira Neal had seven saves for Sage Hill (5-1).
