Newcastle storms to championship

For the second consecutive year, a team coached by Phil Miller has

won the Area Q championship in AYSO Region 97 soccer.

This season, Newcastle United of Newport Beach defeated Tustin,

4-2, to win the Boys under-10 championship.

Newcastle (17-1) scored 23 goals during the tournament that

included wins over Costa Mesa, North Irvine and Tustin twice.

Colton Gayley led the scoring against Tustin with three goals and

Steven Miller scored a fourth goal to secure the win.

Newcastle’s defense held the opposition to seven goals in five

tournament games. Defensive captain Ivan Becerra, Connor May, sweeper

Brice Manning, Ryan Davis and Ian Baugh (goalkeeper) led the defense.

Midfielders Bradley Beaudette, Ryan Look, Skylar Gray, Jesse

Torres and Derek Kula controlled the game for Newcastle.

Newcastle will represent Central Orange County in the state

sectional tournament in the spring of 2003.
