Melo paces Newport
The Newport-Mesa’s eighth-grade All-Net girls basketball team
improved to 3-1 with a 47-35 victory over El Toro at Laguna Beach
High.
Ivy Melo led all players with 15 points and Allie Duernberger
added 12 points and five rebounds for the victors, who trailed 8-0 to
start the game.
Newport went on a 10-6 run to close the first period and led at
halftime, 21-12.
Taylor Holden scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds and
blocked five shots. Brittany Deyan played solid defense and collected
seven boards.
In seventh-grade boys All-Net basketball:
* Newport 62, Riverside Hoopsters 43
Newport raised its record to 3-0 with strong team defense.
Kyle Caldwell led scorers with 15 points aided by P.J. Simpson’s
14 points along with Robbie Boyer (13) and Jamie McGee (11).
Newport defeated Yorba Linda in its first game Saturday, 65-54.
Caldwell led Newport scorers with 15 points and Joe Eberhard (12),
Boyer (11), McGee (nine) and Ali Meshkin (eight) contributed to the
scoring.
In fifth-grade boys action:
* Newport 53, San Clemente 29
Trevor Miles scored 14 points to lead Newport (3-0) to its third
straight win at Costa Mesa High.
Fletcher Della Grotta (nine) and J.D. Abbott (seven) scored for
Newport, who got eight assists each from Randall Hause and Dillon
Campbell.
Austin Rios led Newport with six rebounds as Neil O’Hara (five)
and Collin Krahe (four) also tallied boards.
Parker Stone (five) and Andrew Roth (four) made steals for
Newport.
