Kohl’s Department Stores announced Monday that it will open a

store in Huntington Beach in the spring.

The store will go into the former Broadway department store as an

anchor at the revamped Huntington Beach Mall, which is now called

Bella Terra.

Kohl’s, a publicly traded company, will also open 27 other stores

in Southern California.

The company has said it will hire 4,200 new employees to run the

outlets.

The Huntington Beach store will be one of eight in Orange County.

Mai Zazueta has been handed the reigns as store manager.

The company is based in Menomonee, Wis., and operates 457 stores

in 33 states.

Kohl’s has set up a job hotline for prospective employees, who can

call (877) 639-5645 to begin the application process.

New bulk discount retailer comes to town

Smart & Final, which sells food in large-quantity packages, has

opened a new store at Edinger Avenue and Goldenwest Street in the

Expo Design Center. It’s the second such store in Surf City.

The 20,590-square-foot retail store, across the street from Golden

West College, replaced a Stater Bros. supermarket at that location

that had been closed for more than a decade.

Smart & Final moved out of its warehouse on Gothard Street, which

is a 15,070-square-foot building.

Smart & Final is a publicly traded company with 190 warehouse

stores, two in Huntington Beach. The company also operates 45 stores

under the name United Grocers Cash & Carry.

Business park set for January opening

The developer of an eight-building industrial complex has sold off

all of the component parts and is moving toward its opening early

next year.

Seven companies have signed on to occupy the buildings, which are

at 18237-18251 Gothard St.

Aleeda Wet Suits, Klett Machine Shop, Fox Distribution, McCumber

Fasteners, Taddio Warehouse, Family Trust and Jack’s Surfboards will

occupy the so-called Burke-Gothard Business Park.

Burke Asset Management, a regional developer, built the industrial

park as a speculative project and later recruited the industrial

tenants, who will use it primarily for storage and distribution.

The center will open in January.

United Rentals moves to another site

United Rentals moved into a new home, opening shop at a new 14,700

square-foot building on Gothard Street.

The company, which rents a range of more than 600 tools and other

household items, moved from a 4,000-square-foot building on 3.5 acres

of land on Warner Avenue to the new property at 16300 Gothard St.

With this expansion, the company is projecting a 50% increase in

revenue, which will add to the city’s coffers. Huntington Beach

collects 1% of all sales tax.

United moves into a space once used by Universal Forest Products,

a lumberyard operator that moved out of town in the late 1990s.
