BOYS: Sage Hill High reached what boys basketball Coach Steve

Keith called a low point of the season Thursday with a 56-37 loss to

Saddleback in consolation play of the Garden Grove Tournament at

Garden Grove High.

The Lightning (2-7) committed 39 turnovers and was outscored, 23-2

in the third quarter after trailing just 22-19 at halftime.

“We thought we couldn’t turn the ball any more than we did in the

first half, but the third quarter was just a nightmare,” Keith said.

Junior Kevin Joyce led the Lightning with 13 points, including

three three-pointers.

GIRLS: Fountain Valley staved off a 24-5 second-half surge by

Costa Mesa’s girls basketball team, which tied the game at 48-48 with

3:00 left and pulled out a 54-48 victory in an Artesia Tournament

consolation game.

Rhondi Naff scored 23 points, Rickell Reeves had 10 boards and

Stacee Sanchez hit four three-point shots within a 16-point output

for Mesa, which fell to 4-4.

GIRLS: Estancia High’s girls basketball team found itself down by

one with 0:04 left in regulation, went to the line and tied it, then

saw the second attempt fail and Schurr took advantage in overtime to

go on a 7-0 run and pull out a 58-51 victory at the Artesia

Tournament.

Trisha Wase led Estancia (5-4) with 20 points, and Xochitl Byfield

had 13 points.

The Eagles meet Lakewood at Santa Fe High tonight at 8:55.

GIRLS: Carrie Clark had 15 points and Katie Puishys added 14

points and 11 rebounds to help host Sage Hill earn a 44-29 nonleague

girls basketball win over Saddleback Valley Christian Thursday night.

Haywood Wright, a 6-foot-1 freshman center, added eight points, 12

rebounds, five blocks and three steals to help the Lightning improve

to 8-0.

Clark had three three-pointers for the winners, who are off until

visiting Northwood Jan. 7.

GIRLS: Newport Harbor High’s girls basketball team fell in

overtime to host Valley Christian Thursday night, 46-61, in the

semifinals of the Valley Christian Tournament.

The Sailors (6-3) duel La Serna for third place tonight at 6:30.

BOYS: Corona del Mar High’s boys team had is hopes for a title

game on Saturday shaken Thursday as Thousand Oaks recorded an 81-61

defeat, dropping the Sea Kings to 3-4 overall after a stirring 61-54

victory in Wednesday’s opener over Arroyo Grande at the Arroyo Grande

Tournament.

Corona del Mar meets Trabuco Hills today at 4 p.m.
