BREN EVENTS CENTER -- The Creighton women’s basketball team

started the game with a 13-0 lead and never looked back as the

Bluejays ran past host UC Irvine, 80-57, in a nonconference game

Friday night.

The loss snaps a four-game Anteater winning streak as UCI falls to

5-2. Creighton improves to 6-2.

Creighton played 13 players and 10 scored. Dayna Finch led the

balanced attack with 13 points.

Guard Lisa Faulkner paced UCI with 11 points, including going

6-for-6 from the foul line. Wendy Gabbe had 10 pints and Christina

Callaway had nine points and eight rebounds.

UCI was held to a season-low 57 points, and gave up a season-high

80 points.

Creighton hit 53.8% from the floor and 63.6 from three-point

territory.

UCI returns to action tonight at 7 against the Air Force.

Pirates put away Chaffey, 61-33

COSTA MESA -- Fifth-ranked Orange Coast College scored the first

10 points of the game and cruised to a 61-33 victory over Chaffey

Friday night in the opening round of the 2002 Coast Christmas Classic

on the Pirates’ campus.

Liz Mendoza and Alisa Carrillo each scored a pair of baskets in

the 10-point run. Though the offense cooled down considerably after

that point, the Pirates held the Panthers to a chilly 5-for-23 clip

(21.7%) in the first half and a season-low 10 points.

Chaffey pulled to within 11 points at one point in the second

half, but that was as close as it would get.

Mendoza (13), Carrillo 11), Lauren Murray (10), Nancy Hatsushi (9)

and Leigh Marshall (7) made it a very balanced effort.

The Pirates (10-3) meet Southwestern tonight at 7:30 in the

semifinals.
