Supreme Slammers

The nationally-ranked Newport Beach Slammers won the San Diego

Surf Girls Cup IX, a Nike-sponsored event during Thanksgiving weekend

that featured teams from Texas, Arizona with Northern and Southern

California.

The girls under-11 team, ranked third in the state and 18th

nationally, went 3-0-2 in pool play, including a 3-0 semifinal win

over Dallas Inter. Newport outscored its opponents, 7-1, in five

tournament games.

Center-midfielder Channing Press’ goal off a corner kick was the

only goal of the game as the Slammers beat the San Diego Surf White,

1-0, for the title.

The Slammers will travel to Arizona in January to face teams from

New Mexico, Texas, Arizona and Northern California in preparation for

the State Cup, in February.
