The Newport girls under-13 APP team played four tremendous games

this past weekend.

Newport 6, Tustin 0: Newport started out very strong in their

first outing against Tustin. Sarah Cope, Lily Dierkes, Andrea

Aqueveque, Kristina Heimstaedt, Kelly DeYoung, Stephanie Nealey, and

Tia Shefflette played tremendous defense, shutting out Tustin.

Scoring for Newport were Claire Josephson and Cassidy Gayner, with

two goals each, and Monique Gallardo and Lyndsi Lewan, with one goal

each.

Newport 3, San Juan Capistrano: The midfield play of Alice Cope,

Josephson, Lewan, DeYoung, Lily Dierkes, and Maddy McMains kept the

Newport team on the attack. Alice Cope had several assists. Goals

were scored by Gallardo, Brittany Sowers, and Gayner.

Newport 4, Lake Forest 1: Great goal keeping throughout the

weekend by Shefflette, McMains, and Nealey held Newport’s opponent at

bay. The semifinal game was tied 1-1 through three quarters. Then

Gayner scored her second and third goal of the game, followed by an

insurance goal from Gallardo. Sowers and Josephson chipped some

beautiful center passes to the forwards for great assists.

Huntington Beach 2, Newport 1: Top-ranked Huntington Beach had a

war on its hands with iron-clad defensive play by Aqueveque, Sarah

Cope, and Heimstadt. The trio managed to recover from Huntington’s

fast break and obtain the advantage.

Huntington scored first and then Newport quickly tied it by

halftime with a breakaway score from 35 yards out by Gayner. Going

into the second half, the consistant play of Sarah Cope thwarting

Huntington Beach advances was evident.

The go ahead goal by Huntington was scored at the end of the third

quarter. Newport rallied several times by Alice Cope pushing the ball

up in position to score, only to be intercepted by HB. Time and time

again, Newport’s goalies, McMains, Shefflette, and Nealey made

Olympic style horizontal leaps to bat potential goals away.

Gallardo chased down a fast break from HB and Gayner kept the game

exciting with several scoring opportunities, but to no avail.
