Mapping spots would be a helpful addition to paper

For the last several years, it’s sort of bothered me when I read

the paper, because it’s a local Daily Pilot newspaper, that there’ll

be an article in it about something happening (I’m going to make up a

name) at the Brayburnt Track or whatever, and you think, where in the

heck’s the Brayburnt Track? And they don’t even tell you where it is.

So it would be sort of nice to be able to mentally picture where this

happening is happening.

For years, when I moved in here, I lived in Cliffhaven, but I ...

didn’t know I lived in Cliffhaven, and it took me 10 years to figure

out where in the heck Cliffhaven was because nobody spelled it out to

me.

Good job, Mr. Editor

I just want to congratulate Tony Dodero on that wonderful,

wonderful response to the critics, who thought that you gave too much

credence to protesters and so on (“From the Newsroom,” Monday). I

think those quotes from Lincoln were just absolutely wonderful --

keep up the good work.

Campaign complaints

sound like sour grapes

How much sour grapes do we have to hear from Newport Beach’s

failed City Council candidates and their allies? These guys are worse

than Al Gore and his supporters belly-aching that Gore was somehow

cheated by George Bush’s campaign.

Rather than looking at the facts and hard truth that Richard

Taylor ran a poor campaign and lacked community support, he and his

handful of boosters are attempting to tar local political consultant

Dave Ellis with charges of “dirty campaigning.”

Newport Beach voters are probably the most well-educated and

well-informed voters in the state. We made the right choice in

rejecting Taylor by an overwhelming margin. We received volumes of

campaign material presented from both sides about the issues and

candidates.

Taylor needs to look at the multitude of reasons his campaign

failed so miserably and stop trying to find a political consultant

boogeyman to blame for his defeat.

Serious action needed to salvage council integrity

RE: The Community Commentary by Richard Taylor, Dec. 15.

Thank you for your continuing coverage of the Dave Ellis scandal.

It is truly shocking to learn that Steve Bromberg, our new mayor,

paid Ellis to help manage his campaign when he ran for City Council

in 2000.

We now have four City Councilmen -- Bromberg, Tod Ridgeway, Gary

Adams and Don Webb -- who were elected under Ellis’ management. It is

difficult to believe that they never discussed campaign tactics with

Ellis and were unaware of his “winning at any cost” philosophy.

Adams is certainly fully aware now. It is time for him to do the

right thing and resign. This would help to reestablish some integrity

to our City Council.

A new election should be held for his district with the cost paid

by Ellis, who admitted to composing the fraudulent phone message to

get Adams elected.
