The Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce has announced the winners of

the 94th annual Christmas Boat Parade for boat decorations. Winners

will all receive tickets to the chamber’s Jan. 17 awards dinner.

Internet workshops start 2003 at Newport libraries

The Newport Beach Public Libraries will conduct several Internet

workshops for beginners at two different branch libraries in January.

Registration is not required for these drop-in programs to be held

at 10 a.m. Jan. 4 at the Corona del Mar branch at 420 Marigold Ave.,

10 a.m. on Jan. 18 at the Balboa Branch at 100 E. Balboa Blvd. and

7:30 p.m. on Mondays at the Balboa Branch.

At the Central Library at 100 Avocado Ave., a hands-on Internet

instruction class will be offered at 10 a.m. on Jan. 18. Registration is required for this class only and attendance is limited to 10.

Winter session to begin

for SCR conservatory

South Coast Repertory is inviting applicants for the winter

session of its conservatory for students 18-and-older. The

conservatory will begin on Jan. 6, with weekly classes Monday through

Thursday evenings for nine weeks.

Besides acting, curriculum includes beginning and advanced

playwriting, improvisation, a special class in television and film

acting and musical theater offered for the first time in the fall.

Tuition is $275 per nine-week class.

Take a trip across the seas without ever leaving home

Those looking to take an ocean voyage without leaving Newport-Mesa

are welcome to check out “A Family Cruising Travelogue” at 7 p.m.

Jan. 9 at the Newport Beach Central Library.

Mary and Darwin Boblet will share the free slide lecture about

their three-year sailing trip with their two sons. The outing began

in San Francisco Bay and continued on to Mexico, Hawaii, Samoa, Fiji

and New Zealand.

The couple will discuss how they prepared for the journey, how

they taught their young children, where they encountered sharks and a

burning boat rescue.

Dr. Longhurst recognized

for work in biology

UCI Cardiologist Dr. John Longhurst has been awarded the Lawrence

K. Dodge Endowed Chair in Integrative Biology. Longhurst is a

professor of medicine and cardiology and an expert in acupuncture as

it affects the heard and circulation. His experiments have shown that

acupuncture relaxes blood vessels in a way that helps keep blood

pressure low, potentially reducing the risk of heart disease.

Wa Thiong’o awarded

Medal of Presidency

Ngugi Wa Thiong’o, UCI professor of English and comparative

literature, has been awarded the Medal of the Presidency of the

Italian Cabinet. The medal was awarded by the International

Scientific Committee of the Pio Manzu International Research Center

in Italy. Ngugi was honored based on his work in advancing

multiculturalism and work toward promoting understanding for

minorities.
