Three Estancia High wrestlers had strong performances at the Big

Bear Tournament, completed Saturday, said fourth-year Eagles’ Coach

Steve Perez.

Senior Victor Carmona (125 pounds) took tournament MVP honors

after he went 4-0 on three pins (one in the final) and a technical

fall.

Carmona went 3-0 to win the district championship at 125 pounds

Dec. 19 and placed fourth at the Edison Tournament earlier this

season.

Junior Steve Pedroza (140) advanced to the semifinals of the Big

Bear Tournament, also called the “King of the Hill” Tournament, while

sophomore Raul Cruz won three matches on pins.

Estancia hosts a 52-school tournament Jan. 3-4 that will include

all four Newport-Mesa schools (Newport Harbor, Estancia, Costa Mesa

and Corona del Mar), along with teams from the rest of Orange County,

Las Vegas, Oxnard, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Diego.
