Man arrested after stealing T-shirt

Newport Beach police arrested a man Friday on suspicion of robbery

after a chase during which he forcefully took a T-shirt from an

employee at the Hyatt Newporter, officials said.

After the arrest, the man believed to be in his late 20s declined

to give officers his name, Sgt. Mike McDermott said. The man was

first spotted at about 2 p.m. wearing camouflage and “acting

suspicious” in a bank in the 4300 block of MacArthur Boulevard, he

said.

“He walked into the bank carrying a bag,” McDermott said. But when

approached by officers, he took off in a car, he said. Police

officers found him near Bayside Village by Jamboree Road and Coast

Highway.

A foot chase ensued when the man reportedly ran into the Hyatt

Newporter on Jamboree and “took the shirt off the back of an

employee,” McDermott said.

Officers then arrested him without incident when they found him

hiding in one of the rooms of the hotel, he said.

The man may have been planning a bank robbery, McDermott said.

“We later found the car he was in was stolen,” McDermott said. “He

also had things in his bag such as duct tape, a ski mask, handcuff

keys and a police scanner indicating that he was planning on

committing a bank robbery.”

The entire incident lasted about 20 minutes, he said.

The man, unidentified as of Friday night, is being held in Orange

County jail in lieu of a $50,000 bail. He is expected to be arraigned

at Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach on Tuesday.
