Yurada breaks the scoreless tie in the 10th minute following halftime

on a pass from Janelle Doyle. All-Sea View League sweeper Brooke

Flamson clears the ball away from Sailor goalie Jordan Fredriksen

several times and along with Heidi Eimers, strings together a

give-and-go that leads to a corner kick.

Estancia High’s boys basketball team becomes the first team in the

13-year history of the Daily Pilot Coast Christmas Classic to win two

straight tournament titles. The Eagles claim a 66-60 victory over

Edison. Eagles’ senior and tournament-Most Valuable Player Sam Nelson

adds seven straight points in the final 2:49 to secure the victory

and finishes with a game-high 31 points on 11-of-18 shooting and 6 of

8 from the foul line. The crowd witnesses 14 lead changes until

Estancia senior Gavin Rainey breaks a 36-36 deadlock on a three-point

play with 3:26 to go in the third quarter. All-tournament selection

James Dawkins scores 15 points and adds four assists while Rainey

contributes five points and five boards.

Newport Harbor High point guard Matt Jameson scores a career-high

27 points and grabs eight rebounds to pace the Sailors to a 66-61

victory over Sparks High in the second round of pool-play games at

the Carson City Capitol Classic. Jameson hits on 12 of 13 from the

line and coverts on 6 of 10 from the field to ignite a 34-18 run

through the first half before Coach Larry Hirst empties the bench.

Sophomore Dustin Illingworth also scores a career-high 16 points for

the Sailors.

Southern California College (now Vanguard University) defeats

Midland Lutheran in nonconference men’s basketball action, 93-82.

Adam Dzierzynski scores 27 points while Newport Harbor High product

Justin McIntee finishes with 18 to lead SCC (7-5). The Vanguards

trail by nine at the half but come back behind Dzierzynski’s 11-of-18

shooting effort.
