Breakers claim third
The Newport Beach Breakers went 2-1, including a defeat over Aliso
Viejo in a shootout to take third place in the 2002 Costa Mesa
Classic last weekend.
The girls under-13 silver all-star soccer team from AYSO Region 97
was tied with Aliso, 2-2, at the end of regulation in the third place
game.
Newport eventually won the game on a shootout, 4-3, with goals
from Shannon Boler, Lexi Jenkins, Courtney McIntosh and Lauren Terry,
who saved the last shot on goal to preserve the win. Boler and Maria
Swift scored in regulation for the Breakers.
Boler and Josie Jogwe scored goals for Newport in its 2-1 victory
over Garden Grove in the tournament opener. The Breakers tied Tierra
Santo from San Diego, 1-1, in the second tournament game before
losing to eventual tournament-champion Mission Viejo in the third
round. But the Breakers still secured a second-place finish in pool
play and advanced to a medal-round game against Aliso.
Throughout the tournament the Breakers received strong play from
Swift at sweeper, Claire Castillo at center mid-field; Monique Conant
and Tempest Blaine at outside half; Jenkins, Kelly Rorden and Christy
Olhaver at marking back; McIntosh, Boler, Jogwe and Terry at striker
with Terry, Olhaver and Rorden sharing goaltending duties.
The Breakers begin area play Jan. 11.
