Sailors wallop Carlsbad

In what seems to be a trademark effort of the Newport Harbor High

girls water polo team, the host Sailors jumped to an 11-0 halftime

lead and coasted to a 13-3 nonleague victory over San Diego County

foe Carlsbad Saturday morning with a balanced effort to improve to

8-2.

Leading the way in the scoring column for Coach Bill Barnett’s

Sailors was Anne Belden with four goals. Jenna Murphy, Annie Wight

and Jessica Ball each scored twice.

Single goals were scored by Carolyn Conway, Ashley Parole and

Jennifer Scharfe.

Murphy, Wight and Paige Lansing each had two assists and Belden

and Parole had one assist each.

Wight led the way defensively with four steals and goalie Terin

Cottam had seven saves.

The Sailors have one more nonleague venture (hosting Santa

Margarita on Friday) before opening Sea View League play Jan. 15 when

Aliso Niguel visits.
