Sailors handle CdM, 4-0

For the past two years, one goal decided the winner of the Back

Bay girls soccer game. Newport Harbor High won last year, 1-0, and

Corona del Mar won, 1-0, in 2001. But, Newport Harbor High senior Amy

Burlingham and the Sailors weren’t concerned with the past two years.

They weren’t concerned, indeed.

Burlingham scored three goals and senior teammate Kate Younglove

added another to lead the Sailors past rival CdM, 4-0, Tuesday at

Newport. Younglove scored just three minutes into the second half,

while the University of Texas-bound Burlingham added the final two

blows, one on a penalty kick and then another goal with less than two

minutes remaining. Burlingham’s penalty kick came after Younglove

drew a foul in the box.

“It was complete excitement,” Burlingham said of the victory. “The

win overall is great of course because it’s a Back Bay rivalry game.

To put away some goals was fun for us because we had some trouble

scoring.”

Perhaps, Newport Coach Jason Sorrell said it best when he put the

game in perspective.

“We stepped it up more than they did,” said the Sailors’ Coach who

is in his sixth year with Newport. “I think we wanted it more than

they did. All of our girls wanted to win so bad. It was a great team

win.”

Apparently, Younglove motivated her teammates before the game.

“Before the game we were getting real pumped up,” said fellow

senior teammate Taryn Flamson, who recently committed to play for Cal

Poly San Luis Obispo next season. “ Kate Younglove was going real

crazy and got us motivated to play. This is a huge game for us. It’s

the CdM game and we’re going to go all out. It’s like a playoff

game.”

For CdM, Tuesday’s loss was yet another crushing blow to a team

that has been playing catch-up because of its rash of injuries. The

Sea Kings (3-3-1) were supposed to be at “full strength” Tuesday, as

they welcomed back senior standout Elisha Morgan, who had been out

since Dec. 12 with a back injury. Senior Alivia Mazura has been

dealing with minor pain in her shoulder. Then, there’s CdM’s

sophomore goalie, Rachel Waters, who did not play Tuesday because of

a swollen knee that was injured in a 2-1 loss at Costa Mesa Saturday,

when senior Lauren Shepherdson was absent. Waters will have an MRI on

her knee today. CdM sophomore Tanisha Senaratne played her first game

as goalie for the Sea Kings and finished with six saves.

Newport junior goalie Kara DeMille stopped two shots, while

sophomore Lilja Addeman recorded two saves, as well.

“We’ve been unfortunate with the injuries,” CdM first-year coach

Bryan Middleton said. “We had the effort, but right now with all the

injuries we lack the team fitness to step up and play better.”

CdM didn’t appear to lack much in the first half, which was

tightly contested for the most part. Newport (2-6-5) took advantage

of one out of at least two viable scoring opportunities. In the 12th

minute, freshman Amy Klippert and Burlingham teamed up for a goal

that gave Newport a 1-0 lead.

Klippert drew the defense to her on a breakaway before she booted

a perfect pass to Burlingham on the left wing and Burlingham finished

with a kick back to the inside.
