Newport Harbor, Dana Hills tie

SALT CREEK -- Newport Harbor High’s club surfing team and host

Dana Hills finished in a 63-63 draw in a nonleague match in San

Clemente Tuesday morning where a strong off shore wind and nice sets

off 6-8-foot swells prevailed.

The standoff gives Newport Harbor a 10-1-1 record as it prepares

for the state championship meet Feb. 22-23 at Oceanside.

Geoff Rill, Joey Head and Alex Knost were short board heat

winners.

Tommy Holbrook and Bronson Hovnanian were second in their heats;

David Neira was third in a heat; Brett Catron and Brightton

Brandenburger were fourth in their heats; Nathan Stoneman was fifth

in a heat, and Matt Doheny, Tyler Hosseini and Reagan Ritchie were

sixth in heats.

Leading Newport in the body board was Dan Kretschmar with a

first-place effort, and Justin Kast and Daniel Mathews went 3-6.

Knost was second in the long board, with Catron fourth and Chase

Smith sixth.

In the girls division, Amy Lowry was second, Robin Senour fifth

and Lisa Evans sixth.

Newport and Edison have a nonleague meet set for Jan. 9 at 56th

St. at 6:15 a.m.
