Ionesco plays featured in college production

“An Evening of Ionesco” will feature several short plays by

absurdist playwright Eugene Ionesco, staged by the Orange Coast

College Repertory Theatre Co. The production will take place Feb. 15,

16, 22 and 23 in the Drama Lab Studio at the college, 2701 Fairview

Road.

Ionesco, a Romanian-born playwright, wrote his first play at age

38 after Paris was liberated from the Nazis. He went on to write

dozens of plays, including “Rhinoceros,” “The Chairs” and “The

Lesson,” which helped define him as a humorous observer of the

meaninglessness of modern existence.

Advance tickets of $6 can be reserved by calling (714) 432-5640,

ext. 1. Door tickets are $7.

‘Six Measures’ tells biblical story in 1920s

Big band music, a 1920s setting, period costumes and dancing are

some of the unlikely elements that will be used to tell the biblical

story “Six Measures,” an original work developed by Vanguard

University’s theater department.

“Six Measures” is based on the Book of Ruth and tells the story of

four women who leave their small-town comforts to move to the big

city.

The show is at 8 p.m. Jan. 23, 24 and 25, with a 2 p.m. matinee on

Jan. 25, in the Lyceum Theater, 55 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa. Tickets

cost $8 for general admission, $5 for Vanguard Family members.

Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling (714) 668-6145 and will also be available at the door.

An exhibit will feature the works of Michael Perez and Kirsten

Prosser at the Bayside Gallery Restaurant, 900 Bayside Drive, Newport

Beach. Titled “In the Eye of the Beholder,” the show curated by

Studio Gallery will continue through March 1.

Perez is a pop artist known for dynamic work emphasizing sharply

contrasting colors and shapes. Besides owning his own gallery in

Southampton, N.Y., he has created set displays for TV shows,

including “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch,” “Friends” and “Melrose

Place.”

Prosser, a former fashion designer and Denmark native, studied

with Newport artist Diana Youngblood. In eclectic and colorful

styles, her paintings contain subjects such as still life, city
